But despite the leaps made in the last few years, only a tiny proportion of the more than 800 million people in Africa have access to the Internet.
IBM does not break out revenue for Watson, but Chief Executive Virginia Rometty said in June it is “still growing” and industries, such as healthcare, have adopted the software with some success. On its website, IBM said a large health insurance provider was saving more than $11 million per year by using Watson to improve its call center.
“The last few years, whenever we consume any media on our televisions, on our computers, wherever it is, they’re always kind of competing,” Elan Lee, chief creative officer of Fourth Wall Studios, which created Dirty Work, told Wired. “A lot of the concept behind [this] came from the central concept of, ‘Hey, what if we could get all of those devices and all of those platforms to come together to tell one story and cooperate with each other instead of competing for your attention?'”
Open source access to the Xbox 360 sensor would obviously be a hot commodity for amateur creators as the $150 off-the-shelf rig packs in an RGB camera, a depth-sensor, four microphones and even a motorized pivot. The seriously complex device can pull off full-body 3-D sensing, face recognition and impressive voice recognition.
— CLOUDY CONDITIONS: Microsoft continues to ramp up its business of selling web-based, on-demand computing processing and storage. Stifel Nicolaus & Co. analyst Brad Reback estimated in a recent research note that Microsoft’s Azure cloud-computing business grew about 87% in the quarter to $1.1 billion, continuing “to close the gap” with market pioneer and leader Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN). In the fiscal third quarter, Azure revenue grew 93%. He credited Microsoft’s “maturing product offering” as well as its ability to sell hybrid offerings that combine cloud services with software that runs in customers’ own data centers. Microsoft’s commercial-cloud run-rate — the last month of sales of its Azure and Office 365 products, multiplied by 12 — should hit $18 billion, up 49% year-over-year, Mr. Reback estimated.

I am no knitter and doubt I ever will be one, but I respect the fact that smart people making their own clothes is sort of a Home-Ec aspect of the DIY movement no different than circuit bending or prying the brainpan off your Robosapien. It’s all about autonomizing your life, taking responsibility for it rather then allowing it to be controlled by merchants and manufacturers.
The files aren’t free, but the major labels don’t control the distribution channels, which is good news for consumers because that means more music will be available than ever before.

iDefense, which provides security intelligence services, launched a bounty program in 2002, but it’s long been overshadowed by the more prominent HP Tipping Point Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) bounty program, launched in 2005. HP Tipping Point also sponsors the Pwn2Own exploit contest each year at the CanSecWest conference, which was the inspiration for Google’s Pwnium contest.
For the first time, Apple’s HomeKit smart home system will have its own app, called Home, to control all your internet-connected thermometers, security cameras, door locks and doorbells from one central app on your iPhone or iPad. In the past, third-party HomeKit-compatible hardware could be controlled only with its own app or with specific — at times complicated — Siri commands.
