The Dutch police say they’ve also performed roughly 50 “knock-and-talks,” in-person visits to buyers’ homes to let them know they’ve been identified by their dark-web drug purchases, though they say only one high-volume buyer has been arrested so far. “We want people to be aware,” says Ras. “We have the data. It’s here, and it’s not going away.”

“Something that’s important to Apple, because this is going to be sold in their stores, is they wanted it to be incredibly easy to communicate what it’s going to cost, and how quickly you’ll be up and running – and that you’re up and running before you leave the store,” said Ross Howe, mophie’s vice president of marketing and new business development.

Take the oil industry, which models the impact of catastrophic oil spills regardless of how insignificant the odds. “If you say something is really low probability, people naturally deprioritize it,” says Lee. “If the impact is so significant that it can cause significant damage, it’s not an issue of probability.”

Weather junkies are a demanding breed, their phones and computers bedazzled with services that outline precipitation levels, high and low temperatures, and exactly how windy it’s about to get. Their hunger for data and forecasts is seemingly unceasing; the more localized that information is, the better. And it doesn’t get much more local than your very own home weather station.

Given the little time left in this year’s Congress, there’s little chance the measure will become law before 2009, but its introduction makes it clear that the issue remains alive and will be revisited next year, regardless of who wins the presidency.
Of course, like all interactions in the mirrorworld, this virtual realm will be layered over the view of the physical world, so the robot will also see the real-time movements of people as they walk by. The same will be true of the AIs driving cars; they too will be immersed in the mirrorworld. They will rely on the fully digitized version of roads and cars provided by the platform. Much of the real-time digitization of moving things will be done by other cars as they drive around themselves, because all that a robot sees will be instantly projected into the mirrorworld for the benefit of other machines. When a robot looks, it will be both seeing for itself and providing a scan for other robots.
But this access comes at a steep cost, Zehr said. “Not only do you have to pay for postage, you’ve got to find a stamp, find an envelope and fill it out, then find the mailbox – and once it hits the mail stream it’s not very efficient. The idea of our company is, if I’m going to reach one of these folks, I want it to be as easy as sending an e-mail. I don’t want to think about everything else.”
In the past two years, though, Marvel, DC, and Image (publisher of The Walking Dead series) all tapped comiXology to create branded apps for the iPhone and iPad. The company essentially built digital stores so the big publishers didn’t have to. That move turned comiXology into the Hulk in a room full of Daredevils. It wasn’t part of the original plan, but comiXology’s history of working closely with brick-and-mortar stores on pull lists gave it an edge with publishers. “We were in the weirdest position of any digital-comics company,” Steinberger says. “We were already connected with the retailer.”
