The possibilities include not just vegan cow cheese, but, well, vegan human cheese. The same basic process for synthesizing cow’s milk applies to milk from any other mammal. You just need different genes. Cheese made from engineered human breast milk may not sound like a top seller at the deli counter. But the team says it can serve a practical purpose: Human milk cheese could offer an option to people who have allergies to non-human dairy products. (Chavez said the group has put its experiments with human milk on hold due to Food and Drug Administration concerns about possible autoimmune reactions.)
On December 30, 2013, only a day before a six-year-old girl named Sophia Liu was hit and killed by an Uber driver in San Francisco, Elizabeth Eun-chung Yuh, a 35-year-old South Korean native from Ontario, Canada, died of carbon monoxide poisoning at an Airbnb in Taipei. She had traveled there with friends for a wedding and checked into an apartment downtown, where the landlord had recently enclosed an outdoor porch without properly venting the water heater or installing a carbon monoxide alarm. According to a report in the China Post, her four friends in adjacent rooms were admitted to a local hospital and treated for carbon monoxide inhalation, but Yuh was found dead at the scene. A few weeks later, her father, Deh-Chong Yuh, tweeted at CEO Brian Chesky:

Border patrol: U.S. officials want to see if the same technology that speeds cars through highway tolls and identifies lost pets can unclog border crossings without compromising security.
We caught Instagram’s attention too, and it landed us our first problem. Their legal department demanded we stop using the “Insta” prefix in our name, or remove all references to Instagram on our site (for the record, the prefix references our fast ordering process and turnaround time, much like Instacart). We acquiesced, and after doing so they changed their demands to include we remove all references to Facebook — the Like button, our Facebook page, and Facebook image uploading. We weighed the cost and benefits and decided to keep the name, and more importantly, our established brand and domain.
Finally, research shows what we guy geeks have known all along: we are simply too sexy for our esoteric t-shirts.
For Bitcoin miners, the name of the game is cryptography. And the lottery ticket is a hash – a number that represents a big bunch of data and is created via cryptographic algorithms. If one miner – or a group of miners – can take the transactions on the Bitcoin network and convert them into more cryptographic hashes faster than someone else, they have a better chance of winning that 25 Bitcoin payout. As Bitcoins have skyrocketed in value, the Bitcoin miners have been throwing more and more computing power onto the network.

“He played a very important role in the German Internet scene,” Schulzki-Haddouti said. “But in my opinion, it’s sad that he couldn’t establish his role in a bit more of an institutional way. But maybe he didn’t want it. In America you find many people who founded things like the Chaos Computer Club, and go to conferences, and have a nice office and so forth. He didn’t have this at all. He had to struggle hard for a living.”

The result of their work—detailed in The Bestseller Code, out this month—is an algorithm built to predict, with 80 percent accuracy, which novels will become mega-bestsellers. What does it like? Young, strong heroines who are also misfits (the type found in *The Girl on the Train, Gone Girl, *and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). No sex, just “human closeness.” Frequent use of the verb “need.” Lots of contractions. Not a lot of exclamation marks. Dogs, yes; cats, meh. In all, the “bestseller-ometer” has identified 2,799 features strongly associated with bestsellers.

“But once they’ve got used to the fence you’ll often see them grazing with the hairs on their necks just about touching the wires and they are probably feeling a small tingle and just deciding not to go any further.”
The thing is, I’m not sure any of that matters. Since VC firms tuned out digital media startups, the latest mega-rounds for Vice, Vox and BuzzFeed were led by none other than NBC, a subsidiary of Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA) and Walt Disney (NYSE:DIS).
Now it gets complicated. You need to perform a series of steps on your cell phone to configure it to pair up with The Toy.
