Old school JotSpot fans will be disappointed to note that many of the power user features that Google pulled after the acquisition are still missing from Sites. There’s no sign of the old JotSpot API or other advanced options. It would seem that, at least for now, Google is aiming at a decidedly less technical audience than the one that made up JotSpot’s core user base.
“I thought there would be more audience involvement on next steps,” said Bill Hammerman, a former education professor who runs PetalumaNet, a community website.
That’s because the A380 was designed for a hub-and-spoke network, in which it would move huge numbers of passengers between major airports. And that’s not what we have now, says Richard Aboulafia, an aviation analyst with the Teal Group. The global aviation system is growing 5 percent year over year, allowing for more point-to-point travel. You don’t need to move 600 people from LA to London, then have them take shorter flights from there. You can send 200 to Lisbon, 200 to Florence, 200 to Prague. “It was a very backward-looking concept,” Aboulafia says. “It was 10 years too late.”
“It helps raise our profile,” she said. “We’re well-known in the field in the countries we work in, but we’re not as well-known in the West. It’s a crowded marketplace, and we send 91 percent of our funds overseas, so there’s not a lot to spend on marketing or promotion.”
“That is one of the benefits of marketing in a network culture – if you hit it right you take care of the efficiencies in a viral community,” said Gold.
Jeff Winchell, who runs a site called Nader’s Traders from Seattle, said that he will not take down his site because of the California law.
Flash has already gotten Apple in trouble in the past. In the U.K., two customers complained that Apple was falsely advertising the iPhone in a TV commercial by saying “all the parts of the internet are on the iPhone” when the handset does not support Flash. The U.K.’s Advertising Standards Authority deemed the ad misleading and pulled the ad.
The illustrations, as in The Search for WondLa, are beautiful and each one could stand alone as a piece of art. DiTerlizzi went with a blue-toned theme this time, which ties into the plot in some places and contrasts with the greens that were present in the first book as Eva spent most of her time out in the wilds. The dustjacket for the hardcover is slick and glossy, unlike the rougher matte finish of the original; I’m not sure why that decision was made, though it does parallel the contrast between the high tech world of New Attica and the natural splendor of the Wandering Forest.
While educators still debate how computers and the Internet should be used in the classroom, many parents and kids believe that technology can help provide a better education, according to recent studies.
“We’ve found that with the right author, and with a dedicated fan base who are eagerly awaiting a new book, early promotion – especially with the author’s involvement – fuels interest in the new book and leads to brisk, early demand for the book once it’s on sale,” Rippon said.
