In less than two weeks, Simpson has raised more than $500 in donations from about 60 people. He plans to take the money down to his local Apple store, buy an iPod, and smash it to pieces in the store. Simpson will video the event, and shoppers’ reactions, and post the movie on his site.
That’s pretty much Microsoft’s advice to the 68 million folks using its free Hotmail e-mail service.
Then I started thinking about where I would pick up Janie and Benjamin next, what another Apothecary book that is separate, but related, would be. I wrote forty pages. I just feel like that’s the muscle I’ve been exercising, so that’s the muscle that’s strong. So that’s what I’ve been working on.
“You would think a site that likes to mock people, such as gawker, would have better security and actually have a clue what they are doing. But as we’ve proven, those who think they are beyond our reach aren’t as safe as they would like to think!”
Error codes were a necessity but not a center-stage concern. “When you write code for a new system, you don’t waste too much time writing long messages for the situations in which you detect an error,” Cailliau wrote in an email to me. Memory was, at the time, also an issue; longer messages were impractical. (“Modern geeks have no longer any idea what it was like to program with 64k of memory,” he wrote.)
Football fans desperate to hear witty football commentary in English will want to view the BBC’s stream of selected games. Unfortunately, these games can only be seen on computers inside the U.K.
“The response to the DVDs has been really strong,” he said. “It’s a surprise because obviously we’d been off the air for years. We wondered how deeply the fans cared about the show.
To turn a page, you either swipe with a finger, or just touch the edges of the screen to page back and forth. You can also jump to a particular chapter by tapping the screen once to bring up the inline options. Stanza will also remember your place automatically. Even if you switch to another book in the meantime, the bookmarks are still in place when you come back. If you want to find a specific passage, you can search on words or phrases. Right now this doesn’t extend to the whole book – you can only search in the current chapter, but given this limit it works fine.
A moderate earthquake is really just right. It reminds you about the fundamental hazard, freaks you (and your cat) out a bit, makes you think twice about the those bottles on the top shelf, and makes you think about your own general preparedness.
“Our technology is such that an Abacast server will serve direct connections to a small portion of the total audience. For example, if you take a total audience of 100 people, only 10 of those will directly connect to the server. Of those 10, half will be serving the other 90 people in the distributed network. The other five are Linux or Mac users who can view the stream but don’t have ability to participate in the distributed network.”
“Giving consumers a choice of Internet service providers would open the door to more competition, and let people choose services with better privacy and less spam,” said Chris Murray, Consumers Union’s legislative counsel.
The Roku Ultra is still more expensive than the next generation of Amazon’s Fire TV streaming player. Amazon last week announced that the latest Fire TV model with 4K video will sell for $70, down from $100 previously.
Samsung would sell about 49 million S8s by the end of its first full-year release, in line with first-year sales of the Galaxy S7, he said.

Although Lemony Snicket wasn’t the first snarky narrator in a children’s book (see, for example, Peter Pan), he’s probably the inspiration for many of today’s intrusive narrators (e.g., the Secret Series by Pseudonymous Bosch). But that may not be a bad thing, because when it’s done well, it’s still really funny. The Templeton Twins is about John and Abigail, 12-year-old twins with a somewhat absent-minded inventor for a father.
While some are trying to automate the news, human attempts to personalize the news are gaining popularity. Weblogs like Scripting News, MetaFilter and others provide a personal, human editorial slant that machines can’t mimic.
Only the owner of the product could get unlimited incoming calls. Calls could be received from anywhere in the world, and international calls could be placed but users would be charged the rates set by their VOIP or landline provider. This is similar to a device Xcelis currently sells to businesses.
“It’s also interesting that consumers don’t consider use of a search engine as a particularly influential source of information for their ultimate purchase decision,” according to the report by Forrester analysts Cory Munchbach and Gina Sverdlov.
“So far, the comments have all been positive,” she says. “But on every panel I’ve been on about sex in games, there’s an undercurrent of ‘but how will we protect the women?’ Like women wouldn’t want to see it, or it’s not okay for women. As if women don’t have phenomenal sex drives on their own.”
Rather, he said, the company wants to make sure people do not use its site to do business with companies or individuals in countries that are subject to U.S. sanctions.
Other predictions: Robertson also wrote that the Windows Media Center would suffer the “blue screen of death,” (hasn’t happened yet) and that release of Microsoft’s next-generation operating system, Longhorn (now called Vista), will be delayed to 2007. (Microsoft says it plans to ship in the second half of 2006.)
At first, the book takes a sober tone. Author and Boo.com co-founder Ernst Malmsten – who wrote the book in conjunction with Erik Portanger and Charles Drazen – begins by arguing that the reality of Boo was never quite so extravagant as its media image.
Britain’s new master spook is down with the Grateful Dead – and doesn’t care who knows about it. The Telegraph reveals…
I spoke with one person whose trip was paid for by a smallish security firm. He was one of the company’s first customers, and the company was proud to parade him in front of the press. I asked him whether he walked through the show floor, looking at the company’s competitors to see if there was any benefit to switching.
“CherryOS – if not an outright scam – is the biggest steaming pile of vaporware in my lifetime,” said Curt Meinhold.
A document from a 2008 oversight report indicates that Army Cyber Counterintelligence officers attended a Black Hat security conference without disclosing their Army affiliation. The conference, held annually in Las Vegas and Washington, D.C., attracts hackers and security professionals from around the world. It’s also a hotbed gathering for undercover law enforcement and intelligence agents from around the world who come to learn about the latest computer security vulnerabilities and what specific hackers are up to. The documents don’t indicate if the officers collected any information on conference attendees.
As the website evolves, the company plans to add downloadable, streaming video segments, as well as a search engine that would allow viewers to seek out filmed chapters and verses from the Bible.
“We’re political realists,” Buse said. “A pure extension right now does not have the votes to pass the Senate or the commerce committee. It probably has just 6 votes out of 22 on the committee. Instead of just posturing, we’re trying very hard to work out language that will pass.”
But that doesn’t mean DontBuyMusic is ready to take on its Goliath. Macteens just doesn’t have the money.
While not surprising, the move would bring Google’s search engine into the social networking era, while simultaneously creating a new avenue for blackhats to manipulate search results and potentially incurring the wrath of trust-busting authorities.
