Financial ethics records obtained by Danger Room raise the uncomfortable possibility that Darpa money could ultimately wind up in the pocket of its director. And that introduces at least the possibility of the appearance of a conflict of interest at the very top of the legendary Defense Department science-and-technology division.
Sounds like the [military] is setting itself for the classic…

Set in the massive StarCraft universe, the game features plenty of outrageous weapons and a “deeply evolving” story line (don’t they mean “involving”?).
Yet while some of these programs go beyond merely killing pop-ups and eradicate all advertising on websites, most of these developers understand that everyone’s got a right to advertise … up to a point.
Webloggers Andy Baio and Jish Mukerji launched a fundraiser Friday for the young man they call the “Star Wars Kid,” whose home video has been downloaded millions of times and watched by people all over the world.
“A customer came to us trying to run a site that needs to be kid-friendly,” says Algorithmia CTO Kenny Daniel. His company is an algorithmic clearing house, taking computational solutions from academia and beyond and offering them to the world at large for a fee. In this case, the customer wanted the ability to screen images with some confidence that they wouldn’t be pornographic.
“We will continue to use this broad and powerful tool to expose the activities of North Korean government officials and entities,” he said in a statement.

The founder of a defunct competing service that catered exclusively to private detectives complains that FCC investigators virtually stalked him in their efforts to serve him with a subpoena – showing up first at his home, and then at his parent’s house, where they questioned his sister.
“That’s not luck,” he wrote. “It’s a trend based on seeing the surveillance industrial complex being built bit-by-bit and terabyte by terabyte. As sure as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, if Fusion Centers aren’t built with rigid controls they will be privacy-invading monsters.
But all this comes at a price higher than registrars charge for dot-com, dot-net and dot-org. As of this writing, elizabeth.tv is available for $1,250 per year. Non-dictionary names and words are cheaper; jsmith.tv is going for $50.
It had taken me years of making the right connections to get into 1980s tape trading networks, let alone build my collection. I was able to build a huge Madrugada collection in a few short months. No status required. As a fan, I reveled in my newfound ability to use peer-to-peer networks to amass these recordings, even as I mourned the material experience and status implications we old fans had lost to this more egalitarian means of distributing information and recordings. Fans’ gift culture was different online. Once posted, the resources shared were available to everyone. The internet had altered the flows of our subcultural capital, bringing “anyone with a few hours up to speed” on things that only a dedicated fan would once have taken the time to learn. It had also taken any powers musicians and the recording industry had to control the circulation of the materials they produce.
Why it stands out: A drifter named Doll rescues a neglected toddler, whom she names Lila. But one morning, Lila goes out to the river and essentially un-baptizes herself. Leslie Jamison, author of The Empathy Exams (above), wrote for The Atlantic: “Robinson resists the notion of love as an easy antidote to a lifetime of suffering or solitude, suggesting that intimacy can’t intrude on loneliness without some measure of pain.”
“Twenty-first century software technology does allow for patch design to be much more user-friendly,” he added. “But installing this patch seems to require the help of an entire technical support team.”
Today, Mtema is helping the Ifakara Health Institute evaluate how Zipline’s service affects health outcomes in Tanzania. Quantifying lives saved and medical conditions treated could go a long way toward convincing Zipline’s deep-pocketed backers in the international aid and development community—such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation—that delivery drones can become a global force for humanitarian good. The for-profit startup has already raised at least $41 million in funding from investors.
“The project will foster appreciation for the music-development process, songwriting, musicianship, recording, performing, producing, distribution and cultural values,” the website says.
There are always four heroes, so you can have one, two or four people playing the heroes. You’ll need one or two people controlling the zombies, too, so you can get between two and six people playing depending on how you divide them up. However, I’ve found that the zombie players don’t really have as much strategizing to do so my gaming group really prefers to have just one zombie player against the heroes.
To see that they do, the Ad Council has recruited the help of celebrities, YouTube stars, and popular Snapchat creators. The Goodby team even developed an interactive, animated video in collaboration with Academy Award-winning Moonbot Studios. But August Ames and Tommy Gunn, as fans might know them, aren’t here simply to have sex on camera. If that were the case, then the VR camera rig in front of Gunn’s face wouldn’t be forcing him to lean back so far at the waist that he retires to a daybed in the corner to stretch between takes. (“My hip flexors are killing me,” he growls during one lull.)

The firing, which is now in dispute, came days after News Corp. owner Rupert Murdoch called Yahoo and Google copyright thieves.
“I-mode is a specification. If i-mode was a superior specification or technology, then other companies would have adopted it by now,” he added. “But 500-and-some companies have gotten behind the WAP standard rather than the i-mode standard. That’s got to tell you something.”
