All of Apple’s software is being updated to take advantage of this display: Keynote, Pages, Numbers. iLife software too like GarageBand and iMovie and iPhoto.Apps run at the same size as on previous iPhones, with black borders above and below if necessary, if they aren’t optimized for this larger display yet.
Let’s be clear, though: Just because this time the group conducted its experiments in a hard vacuum doesn’t mean that an interstellar warp drive is soon to come. Marc Millis, who headed up the now-defunct Breakthrough Propulsion Physics lab at NASA’s Glenn Research Center—which, like Eagleworks, was dedicated to finding science-fiction-sounding ways to move a spaceship—says there are plenty of other interactions between the drive and the test chamber that could account for the results. “Even if it was done in a hard vacuum,” Millis says, “you have to take into account the distance between the drive and the chamber wall, whether those walls were conductive, and the geometry of the system.”
I first began interacting with members of the Wikipedia community in March 2014. I had become curious about a particularly pedantic editor called ‘Giraffedata,’ whom I recently profiled for Backchannel I asked him to point me to other ‘WikiGnomes,’ the moniker affectionately awarded to those within the editorial community who tirelessly fix minor technical and grammatical errors.
“It means I can do what I like on the site, and preserves some autonomy over presentation of my books, autonomy that is often lacking in the rest of the publishing experience,” she said.
Note: I’d like to thank Monica at LeapFrog for making two little boys grin ear-to-ear. I’d also like to thank Emma for the review copy of Magic School Bus: Oceans.
You can also browse for articles and blogs. I couldn’t find any blogs yet, and I’m pretty happy with NetNewsWire for RSS, but we like that the option is there. And in the “Popular” section, I found but one “article” about illustrator Ronald Wimberly, a person about whom I am now much better informed.
Twitter, when faced with years of complaints from the blocked, capitulated to them by restoring access to the users who had blocked them. (While some argued the change better reflected how the block feature actually works, Twitter said it was because retaliation scenarios could spur greater abuse.) But I’ve managed or worked with many communities with tools like this, and you’d be amazed how common it is for people who misbehave and get punished to come crying to the admins. Once you scratch beneath the surface of their complaints, however, nine times out of ten they were the ones in the wrong: “Well, yeah, I did break the rules, but I still shouldn’t be punished!”
“They asked what I use daily, have always on,” he says. “I said, my watch. So they said they could change that out for some recording watch.”
For more than a year, Congress has been arguing over how far to expand the government’s ability to install blanket surveillance equipment inside the United States without court oversight. That’s a purely political question.
Unlike big brands, Dogfish Head doesn’t leverage gimmicks or big splashy advertising campaigns to promote their product, according to Sam. They let their customers do the talking.
Crispr is a powerful gene-editing tool that has upended biology and could revolutionize medicine, but the Crispr controversy of the week has nothing to do with how it’s used or even how it works. From the outside, it’s kind of comically petty: One famous scientist wrote an article that downplays the work of another famous scientist, and this has gotten some people very mad.
“All of it comes from either state or government sources. A minority is purchased from private corporations that advertise on the Web,” says Elena Garella, an attorney for Sheehan. “Absolutely it’s all lawful sources.”
“In the end, all politics are local,” said Ross Mayfield, chief executive of Socialtext, a company that makes collaboration software. “People don’t realize how much they have in common with their neighbors on political issues. Anything that can bridge those issues – so they can bubble to the top – is powerful.”
I’d put together a two-step plan: A quick fix, in two days or so. And a longer-term fix, which could possibly take a few weeks to do. And to do that you’d take a look at what are a user’s tasks, and what information architecture could be in place.
Yes, Oracle has existing relationships with beaucoup businesses. And yes, its sales staff dwarfs anything you’ll find at a NoSQL startup. But Schireson believes that, yes, the open-source nature of databases like MongoDB can compete in other ways, pointing out that over 100,000 developers download the open-source Mongo code each month. “They just find it on the Internet, and they start doing something with it. It’s not through an interaction with our sales team that most people become acquainted with the technology.
“Kemp is redirecting his administration’s failure to secure state infrastructure to his opponents.”
A note about the rulebook: it’s fairly well laid-out, with explanations of setup, a walkthrough that shows you how to play a few turns using specific cards, and an appendix that details all of the traits and effects that you’ll see listed on cards. It’s also a huge rulebook — definitely not for casual gamers. Before you can get started, you’ll want to sit down and read through it all for an overview, and then you can expect to be flipping through the rulebook as you play. Because of the sheer number of effects and abilities, it will take many plays before you become familiar enough with all of them to play without looking things up.
“The level of effort required to find a bug is a lot lower than the level of effort required to take that bug and turn it into an exploit,” Evans says. “Substantially so, in our experience.”
The next week, shaggy-haired emo teenagers were harassed again by punks and rockabillys in the capital, prompting police protection and a segment on the TV news. Most recently, a Mexican newspaper reported that metal heads and gangsters have warned Tijuana’s emo kids to stay away from the town’s fair next month.
Until recently, Linux filtered into U.S. government computers through system administrators who simply installed it because it is cheap. But increasingly, experts say, agencies are willing to pay for high-performance hardware tailored to Linux.
As the company, with a market value topping $400 billion, continues to grow at a rapid pace, its ascendency has not gone unnoticed by lawmakers. Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) urged lawmakers on the House Judiciary Committee’s antitrust panel Thursday to hold a hearing on Amazon’s Whole Foods bid.
Shouraboura won’t show that part to journalists or anyone else not working for her company. That’s because at Hointer, it’s not the app that’s the killer app. It’s how Hointer manages to get those jeans down the chute in thirty seconds or less. That merch-moving tech is the heart of Hointer’s logistics platform, a platform Shouraboura hopes to license to larger retailers seeking to reach true offline-online convergence before their competitors.
Never before would placing general standards to qualify as a supplier establish joint employment. But Microsoft recently noted that its supplier code of conduct has led “to substantial and growing legal expenses and great uncertainty.” And Microsoft may not be the only ones getting caught in the NLRB’s crosshairs. Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), for example, requires suppliers offer 15 days of paid leave, a $15 minimum wage, and a new child benefit for mothers and fathers estimated to cost the employer $4,000.
To really check everything out, I wanted to go through both naming processes. Because the IAU process takes much longer than would be possible in time for my deadline, I turned to Uwingu. I chose two small craters overlooking the epic Valles Marineris canyon system. (I wanted my craters to have good views.) For the first one, my order-loving brain wanted to follow the approved IAU conventions. Large Martian craters are named for famous scientists or science-fiction authors who have contributed to mankind’s ideas of Mars and anything under 60 kilometers is named after a town on Earth.
