He spoke during a separate presentation at the International Astronautical Congress meeting in Guadalajara, which Musk addressed on Tuesday.
But in recent days the Taliban has begun salting its feed with English updates to its (now) 2,900-plus followers, the Guardian noticed Thursday:
There seems to be only one basic rule: Don’t call them, they’ll call you. So if you’re running an open source project – whether it involves Bitcoin or not – just keep your head down and keep coding. This Holiday season, you too might get a visit from Bitcoin Santas.
If Samsung wants to recover quickly and avoid a long-term brand meltdown, its leaders should take a long look in the mirror … and at Toyota and Apple.
WIRED: Did you have any qualms that audiences would see this as glorifying someone who’s done something most people would find reprehensible?
Edited to add: Capstone also did an interview with Art Baltazar, the illustrator.
The deal would make Time Warner the target of the two largest media-company acquisitions on record, according to Dealogic. The highest was AOL’s $94 billion acquisition of Time Warner at the end of the dot-com boom.
Gartenberg Bing is now a search option. This is huge. Seriously huge. It’s not the default but there’s a battle between shaping up. #wwdc
Certainly, this sets Facebook in some competition with Google, especially with AdSense, which is Google’s ad platform that publishers use to put ads on their sites.
And now the C&NN and another group called ecoAmerica have created a website, Nature Rocks, to make it easy for families to have fun in nature on their own and with other families. There’s a searchable map of the United States where you can look for outdoor destinations, activities and services like zoos, ski areas and campgrounds. There’s an activity finder that lets you specify time available (from 30 minutes to overnight), location (from your own backyard to the greater region) and your children’s ages, from infants to teens. They’re creating community with Facebook and Twitter. And there’s a “Nature Staycation” planning guide you can print, with some games and activities to get you started.
Viz Media is calling the weekly serial anthology Weekly Shonen Jump Alpha orWeekly SJ Alpha. It will include the popular manga series Bakuman, Bleach, Naruto*,* Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan, One Piece, and Toriko. I’m not familiar with all of the series but I’ve reviewed Bleach for GeekDad and highly recommend it. The eldest son chimes in to say that the manga Naruto is very cool as well.
“We just have taken a policy decision to say, ‘Any foreign government that wants to read our source code, the answer is no’,” Clark said.
The film studios – including Walt Disney’s film units, Vivendi Universal’s Universal Studios, Metro Goldwyn Mayer, Viacom’s Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, News Corp.’s 20th Century Fox, and AOL Time Warner’s Warner Brothers – are concerned the code would allow their films to be pirated over the Internet.
All Species received its first $1 million in October 2000. The project has since reeled in funds from a number of tech contributors. The total effort will cost approximately $3 billion.
“I just feel that women the world over should have access to affordable, safe contraception,” Bell said. “It’s so much more than just a business. Margaret Sanger is my hero, and she was a champion of birth control.”
Bonneau didn’t yet know that she was part of a scam that has become a trend in the racing world: social media banditing—where a runner uses social media to enter a race without officially registering. This typically means lifting a bib number off of someone’s Instagram ahead of a race, creating a duplicate, and then using the hoisted entry to run a race incognito. It’s a phenomenon born out of the current dual booms of technology and endurance events—and the very tools bib counterfeiters are using to circumvent race regulations are also being used to bust, ban, or—in some cases—publicly shame cheaters. And many are still divided about whether it’s a silly prank or a serious threat.
Click fraud has become a classic security arms race. Google improves its fraud-detection tools, so the fraudsters get increasingly clever … and the cycle continues. Meanwhile, Google is facing multiple lawsuits from those who claim the company isn’t doing enough. My guess is that everyone is right: It’s in Google’s interest both to solve and to downplay the importance of the problem.
However, a few sellers out there remain hopeful someone will put up at least $75 for the likes of spoonula.com or $200 for phonefetish.com.
To call the Venom a car is a serious understatement. It goes from zero to 200 mph in 20.2 seconds. It isn’t a car. It’s a rocket meant to destroy automotive records. Those fortunate enough to have driven it still talk about it, in almost reverential tones. The conversation usually starts, “You have no idea…”
Miriam Adelson is an accomplished physician who has published around a hundred research papers on the physiology and treatment of addiction. Many sites required the browser’s “advanced mode” to be turned on. Wired.com’s CSS-heavy top part renders O.K., but the blog section looks great.
One of the defendant students and his parents filed a motion to strike under the state’s anti-slapp law, saying the posts were jocular in nature, intended as a joke and that the statement the student posted was protected speech. The student had written, among other things, “I’ve wanted to kill you. If I ever see you I’m … going to pound your head in with an ice pick.”
It is uncertain, though, whether Jones could get very far if he tried to prosecute the owners of these sites.
They also spend their dinners working on strategies to help Airbnb run well as it grows. Now that the company has ballooned to 2500 people, 1100 of whom came on in the last year, they’ve had to figure out how to communicate more quickly. Chesky and Johnson have brought back a Thursday afternoon all-hands meeting, which had slipped to biweekly. And they’ve recently introduced a weekly 100-person meeting attended by all the executives’ direct reports. “It’s new, we’re still getting the hang of it,” says Johnson. On first blush, it seems like a counterintuitive way to work in a startup culture where the dominant viewpoint is that smaller teams move faster. But by making the big company decisions in front of as large an audience as possible, Johnson and Chesky hope to ensure everyone is working with the same information as they go about running their parts of the business. They hope it will streamline communication and make the organization feel flatter for longer.
Enthusiast sites like BYODKM.net, which stands for “bring your own display, keyboard and mouse,” are popping up. Lots of sites, like PVRblog or MacMerc, are detailing how to turn a mini into a living-room digital video recorder.
GD: How are you a GeekDad?
JW: Well, I have offspring, so that’s half of that. As for how I’m a geek… You’re giving away my fantasy novels aren’t you? But I have been hardcore geeking since my childhood Transformers obsession. And I started roleplaying at about nine… I think my credentials are good.

“These include (but are not limited to) adverse events related to the acute pharmacological effects of MDMA and the potential for brain serotonin neurotoxicity,” Ricaurte said. “If subjects are fully informed of these risks and still chose to participate, and if the protocol has been deemed scientifically and ethically acceptable by the appropriate regulatory bodies, then it should be held to the same standards as other clinical research projects.”
“This could open a real Pandora’s box,” said Gregg Williams, an attorney who specializes in employment law for Fenwick & West in Palo Alto. “There are some private things on office computers that you really don’t want to know about.”
However, once you get used to a character’s abilities, you can move through a game pretty quickly, playing combos and resolving combat phases quickly. I found that the “best of three” play was particularly good at letting you get used to both your own character and your opponent’s. Of course, if you start with one of the 2-pack sets, that also limits the number of different types of cards you’ll need to learn at one time.
Retailers also recognize that importance of and need for an effective ratings system. All major video game retailers support the ratings via their store policies regarding the sale or rental of Mature-rated games to customers under the age of seventeen without a parent’s permission.
