In Naypyitaw, the country’s vast capital some 170 miles south of Mandalay, government officials quickly realized the seriousness of the unfolding situation. Chris Tun, the head of Deloitte’s Myanmar operations and a longtime member of the country’s tech community, received a frantic phone call. On the line was Zaw Htay, a senior official in the office of President Thein Sein, a retired general who until a few years earlier had served as the fourth most powerful figure in the junta and a loyal comrade to dictator Than Shwe.
Fox’s research, an extension of a volunteer study that begun in January, will investigate whether some people are particularly sensitive to cell-phone electromagnetic fields. In the first stage of the project, Fox collected survey results from 4,000 participants, about 6 percent of whom indicated some degree of symptoms, such as headaches or burning skin, that they attributed to electromagnetic fields.
Eircom retrenches: Eircom, the Irish telecoms operator, said it would be scaling back its Internet businesses and its British and Northern Irish operations in a restructuring move after the sale of its mobile phone arm, Eircell.
“There’s nothing in this example to be impressed by,” wrote computational cognitive scientist Joshua Tenenbaum of MIT in an email. He added that “it’s not clear that to meet that criterion you have to produce something better than a good chatbot, and have a little luck or other incidental factors on your side.”

What should we do? As leaders or managers, our job is to create a productive environment for employees with, at a minimum, physical and emotional security. Aspirationally we want our culture to allow everyone to contribute their best, most meaningful work. In both cases, that absolutely entails creating a diverse and inclusive culture—and that means rooting out and banning incel beliefs.
One of the malicious programs opened a remote backdoor to the computer, establishing an encrypted covert channel that masqueraded as an SSL connection to avoid detection. This allowed the attackers ongoing access to the computer and to use it as a “beachhead” into other parts of the network, Alperovitch said, to search for login credentials, intellectual property and whatever else they were seeking.
Modernization costs poor: The Internal Revenue Service’s efforts to upgrade services are hurting the nation’s poor, a taxpayer advocate says, with many losing the ability to challenge incorrect audits because they don’t have computers at home. Many also don’t have regular phone service.
At first, writers like Yakubu wrote their stories longhand, then paid typists to transcribe them. That changed as Internet cafes and business centers provided easy access to computers. The writers live throughout the cities and villages of northern Nigeria, but the books typically find their way to printers in Kano. The authors often hire local artists to design the cover, and pay the printer to produce a few thousand stapled copies. Sometimes they sell the rights to the printer, who decorates the books with colorful covers showing Bollywood or Kannywood actresses Photoshopped into traditional Hausa clothing. Shopkeepers sell them in Kano’s Sabon Gari market for about a dollar a piece alongside everything from tomatoes to tires.
“We started getting requests for (silent tones),” said Jeremy Xavier, marketing manager for Modtones’ parent company, Faith. “We didn’t understand why anyone would do that when you could just turn your ringer off.”
“The amount of money that was going to be spent on these movies would utterly preclude it (from) being interesting,” he said.
“They’re the professionals,” Putney said. “I’m just a business person, I’m not a politico. We got him to this point, and we’ll let the best team possible field it to carry him through.”
Wired: Okay. Fair enough. With these expansions, are they going to be “traditional Blizzard expansions,” or is it just going to be a story continuation? Like, are you going to add new characters, units, that kinda thing?
Some in the adult entertainment community say they’re unfazed by the screeds. But the messages have gotten so voluminous, and so creepy, that the FBI has begun to investigate.
The NSA’s general counsel, Robert Deitz, said in 1999, “I wish to make clear that the agency does not violate the Constitution or the laws of the United States. NSA operates under the eyes of Congress, the executive branch and the judiciary, and an extensive oversight system regulates and limits its activities.”
“We tried to make it as unbreakable as feasible,” Smith says. “As far as we know, it’s held up.”
Michael Fitzpatrick, director of NorthPoint Communications Group, said in a statement that he hopes the centers “will coalesce universities, industry and government to enable the full attainment of the potential of optics.”
Keep in mind, this test is conducted wherever people have access to a web browser and a printer. As far as the Powers that Quiz know, every single person taking the test is at the library with a team of MIT graduates, three Nobel Prize winners and a decoder ring. This was delightful news to me. It gave me the perfect rationale for my eventual non-winning: Whatever my placement in the standings, I can always tell myself that everyone who scored better than me is a dirty cheat. Bullet dodged! The fact that nobody is likely to cheat for the right to humiliate themselves in Hungary briefly occurs to me, but I’m able to dismiss it.
Rating: Mesmerizing. The gameplay can be a little tricky at first but it’s an excellent family game.
