American consumers show no signs of putting away their wallets as the holiday shopping season approaches the halfway point.
Our basic framework is an evolutionary algorithm, which models biological evolution. We start by creating a “gene pool” consisting of a few randomly-generated touring plans with the attractions the user has chosen. We “score” these touring plans to see how long they’d take to complete, if the user were to follow them in the park. Then we choose one or two of the touring plans to “mate,” which means we combine them together in a certain way to produce a new touring plan. We score that new touring plan, and if it’s better than the worst touring plan in the gene pool, the worst one dies and the new one takes its place in the population. Just like in real evolution, mutations (such as swapping the position of two rides in a plan) are introduced occasionally to keep the population diverse and evolving. The hard part was developing those mating functions.
In an email to WIRED, AMD noted that the research was performed in a “controlled, dedicated lab environment,” and that because of its processor architecture the company believes that “there is near zero risk to AMD products at this time.”
Rosen said the cursor software only connected to Comet’s servers to check for software updates and, for billing purposes, to upload information about what cursors the user had selected. While Comet assigns users a unique ID, which it calls a download number, the company does not collect any personal data, Rosen said.
Parson apologized to the court and to Microsoft, saying, “I know I’ve made a huge mistake and I hurt a lot of people and I feel terrible.”
“The problem with a command hierarchy from a cognitive standpoint is you need to be focused on remembering commands and remember where you are in the hierarchy. That is a strong cognitive burden to place on somebody, especially if they’re looking for signs and looking for other things on the road.”

That’s because the longer a storm hovers over land, funneling many Mississippi Rivers’ worth of moisture into its watersheds, the more strain it puts on those systems. The most destructive hurricanes in recent memory—Harvey in Texas and Florence in North Carolina—proved so catastrophic because they stalled over land, inundating those areas with multiple days of intense rainfall. But the current hurricane scales, which are based on wind speed, don’t take time into account. “With atmospheric rivers we had the opportunity to bake those numbers in from the very beginning,” says Ralph.
It’s especially important for Thapa and Pandey to engage with other researchers because their claims are so monumental, says Raychaudhuri. When Schön was finally caught for fraud, he didn’t just ruin his own reputation—he derailed the careers of other scientists whose research was based on his work. The same could happen now.
We superhero geeks like to get as much information as possible about upcoming superhero movies. So I saw multiple tweets about on-set photos of Shailene Woodley, who is playing Mary Jane Watson in the sequel to <a title="Video: Everything Wrong With The Amazing Spider-Man in 2 Minutes or Less” href=”https://www.wired.com/underwire/2012/12/amazing-spider-man-movie-sins/”>The Amazing Spider-Man movie. And mostly what I heard was “she doesn’t look pretty enough.” Because, apparently, she was photographed without makeup, looking like, well, an attractive women you might run into on the street every day rather that extra-hot supermodel Mary Jane.
