But without all the options we have for “connectivity,” I would never have met him. And I would have missed out on some of the most beautiful love affairs, the deepest friendships and the funniest IM buddies anyone has ever had in the history of the world.
The “iTravel” application described in the patent would perform a host of functions currently accomplished by multiple different apps. This unified app would let you search for (and check into) flights, make travel reservations, and retrieve reservation information from a website, e-mail, or another device. Apple first filed this patent back in 2008.
In an effort to win some of those 7 million Flickr users, Zooomr will soon offer a free tool on its website that imports a user’s photos from Flickr over to Zooomr when they sign up.
But on Saturday, his former label, Universal, which owns the master rights to those songs, alerted Reznor that because it’s trying to sue YouTube and MySpace, the remixes had to come down. The label is suing YouTube (Google) and MySpace (News Corp.), because they want to be alerted by copyright owners when a user posts something copyrighted, rather than being required to screen every song and video before it appears.
You want support for every file format you’ve ever dreamed about and video all the way up to 1080p? Here’s the list:
First the good news. The runners, those that survived as well as those who were dinner, seemed to have an overwhelmingly good time at the event. I’ll provide some feedback from participants a bit later in the post, but overall the event ran smoothly.
The best-known generative modeling systems are “generative adversarial networks” (GANs). After adequate exposure to training data, a GAN can repair images that have damaged or missing pixels, or they can make blurry photographs sharp. They learn to infer the missing information by means of a competition (hence the term “adversarial”): One part of the network, known as the generator, generates fake data, while a second part, the discriminator, tries to distinguish fake data from real data. As the program runs, both halves get progressively better. You may have seen some of the hyper-realistic, GAN-produced “faces” that have circulated recently — images of “freakishly realistic people who don’t actually exist,” as one headline put it.
iOS 4 upgrades for iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 3G, but not all the feautres are supported for 3G. No multitasking for 3G.
Töben left Germany for Australia when he was 10 years old and went on to earn a Ph.D. in English and Philosophy from Melbourne University. He told the Australian press this week that he believes he could spend up to five years in jail if he returns to Germany. He said he’s willing to serve more time in German jails for his beliefs, but does not relish the thought of what might happen to him in such circumstances.
The figure below is a sketch that illustrates accretionary wedges quite nicely. This is a line drawing of seismic-reflection data that you can find on this site.
Like real security, security theater has a cost. It can cost money, time, concentration, freedoms and so on. It can come at the cost of reducing the things we can do. Most of the time security theater is a bad trade-off, because the costs far outweigh the benefits. But there are instances when a little bit of security theater makes sense.
“Some special large-scale indexing structure is being used…. We keep everything in memory, otherwise it would be very difficult to serve the query in a fast way. When you access data in hard disk, that will be very painful,” says Yu. “We go to memory, so that’s even faster than Flash.”
In the age of surveillance paranoia, most smartphone users know better than to give a random app or website permission to use their device’s microphone. But researchers have found there’s another, little-considered sensor in modern phones that can also listen in on their conversations. And it doesn’t even need to ask.
Finally, the iPlayer will no longer include radio content. “Radio and music will come out of BBC iPlayer, and we’ll develop a new standalone product,” said Erik Huggers, who runs the BBC’s Future Media & Technology department. The idea is to focus websites on interactive live radio and programming, across multiple devices.
Contributors like Viren will play a critical role in determining the success of wikiHow, a four-month-old website applying the wiki model of information collection – in which anyone can be a contributing writer or editor – to a new arena.
But not every 404 error is evidence that some critical dataset got tossed. The webpages might be the same; it’s the world around them that changed.
In addition to statutory damages, Hypertouch is also asking for an injunction to prevent BobVila.com and BlueStream Media from sending out further messages that contain false headers or are missing contact information.
Google “wants to have this end-to-end experience, but it’s not clear that people really want that,” Dawson said.
People like Lee have, of course, been war-gaming these nightmares for well over a decade. And for all the sophistication of the Ukraine grid hacks, even they didn’t really constitute a catastrophe; the lights did, after all, come back on. American power companies have already learned from Ukraine’s victimization, says Marcus Sachs, chief security officer of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation. After the 2015 attack, Sachs says, NERC went on a road show, meeting with power firms to hammer into them that they need to shore up their basic cybersecurity practices and turn off remote access to their critical systems more often. “It would be hard to say we’re not vulnerable. Anything connected to something else is vulnerable,” Sachs says. “To make the leap and suggest that the grid is milliseconds away from collapse is irresponsible.”
Super Drag&Go also allows you to select a bit of text and drag it anywhere on the Web page you’re currently browsing to run a search for the selected text in a new tab. You can also drag an image to download it in a new tab.
To create the digital sculptures, Eno generated a number of colorful digital slides and developed special software to display the images as randomly overlapping, constantly moving patterns of color and light. He also composed and collected various ambient sounds to be played back at random through a similar software application. The results are projected onto the walls or displayed on arrays of flat screen monitors.
So I went looking for some other solution. Getting organized seemed a good first step. Normally, I don’t like making lists. I even have to confess my true geek sin, which is that I don’t have an electronic organizer.
This week’s Sea-Floor Sunday image is of a submarine volcanic complex in the Aegean Sea. This image and much, much more about the geology of this area can be found on this page of the NOAA Ocean Explorer website.
Bruce Schneier is CTO of BT Counterpane and author of Beyond Fear: Thinking Sensibly About Security in an Uncertain World.
Under Accessibility, there’s a host of other settings too. You can switch on VoiceOver and tap onscreen text to have it read out loud to you. Switch on Zoom so you can double tap with three fingers to zoom in on the entire iPad screen. You can also adjust the contrast on the screen.
The portion of his website Mueller is talking about is the “Trench Coat Mafia” page – a parody he placed online soon after news broke about the Columbine massacre. It says: “Hello and Heil Hitler! My name is Eric and this is my Web page! I hate jocks, Jews and jiggaboos. I loathe wops, spics and blood-engorged ticks.”
For me the real winner here is the content. Not only have they managed to hook in a big name to kick off the product, but the quality and ingenuity of how that content is presented is excellent. They key will be whether Sony can continue to provide a stream of equally high quality (and profile) titles for the WonderBook once it launches later this year.
