Half of the shuttered DOI computer systems remain offline. The shutdown of the system has kept at least 40,000 Native Americans from receiving their trust-fund checks since then.
According to a regulatory filing on Friday, Apple said its annual sales of $215.6 billion were 3.7% below its target of $223.6 billion, and its operating income of $60 billion was 0.5% short of the $60.3 billion target.
Seven of the world’s leading investment banks, including Goldman Sachs Group and Morgan Stanley Dean Witter on Tuesday said they would launch a joint financial information website for use by their big institutional clients.
Of course, the best way to watch the World Series is with friends—or frenemies, if they’re rooting for the wrong team. Yelling at innocent telecoms devices might be America’s second favorite pastime since the days of the Radiola Grand, but it’s always better to yell at your devices with loved ones by your side.
The first book is one I’m sure you heard about earlier this year: Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua, which made headlines when an excerpt was printed in the Wall Street Journal at the beginning of the year. The book is about Chua and her daughters, and describes her “Chinese mother” style of parenting. Here was my own take on the subject, based on the article and some conversations with others (but before I’d read the book itself).
This week the Air Force offered $5,000 to anyone with information about a box of grenade rounds it lost in North Dakota. Officers from the 91st Missile Wing Security Forces team misplaced the ammunition—meant for an MK 19 automatic grenade launcher—on May 1 while moving between two intercontinental ballistic missile sites. Minot Air Force Base said in a statement that the box had fallen off a vehicle when a hatch popped open. A hundred Air Force members walked the six mile stretch of gravel road where the grenades are thought to have been lost, but didn’t find them. Officials say that the grenades will only work properly in an MK 19 launcher, but damage to them or their box could, as you might imagine, cause an explosion. If you know where the grenades are, call the anonymous tip line at (701) 723-7909.
The copy was not, however, on Scannell’s server; it was a mirror hosted elsewhere. On Wednesday, all traces of the document and presentation were removed from the website of the organization that hosted the February 2003 conference where Torch presented its paper. A Google cache copy disappeared on Thursday.
When Falzone was asked if he would accept commissions, he replied, “I don’t think I want to go through the pain of making all that joinery again.”
Freelance artist and designer Henrik Leichsenring claims to have invented the world’s first mixable YouTube video. But even if he didn’t, “The Mixable Dancer” is still an eerie reel worth freaking, thanks to its Donnie Darko disco vibe.
Most users didn’t seem to mind, however. After Gmail opened up to everyone in February 2007, its user base ballooned to tens of millions.
Another option is Adblock, an add-on extension for Mozilla that blocks advertisements the browser’s built-in ad blocker may miss. It performs well but, as its developers note, is still a work in progress.

Following the telecast, bids will be accepted through July 31 on Maddalena’s Profiles in History website.

The companies said UAL will make a cash tender offer of $2.60 per share for each of the outstanding common shares of MyPoints (MYPT).
I did describe this to Steve Jobs the night of the iPad introduction and he said “so it’s no big deal.” We talked about family things after that for a short while. But that engineer did get fired. I’m sure that Apple HR told the engineer that it was because everyone in that same situation gets fired. Does that jive with this iPhone situation? What am I missing here?
In one town, Mean wasn’t able to get a reliable connection to the internet, which is not surprising considering that until two years ago, net access in Cambodia was only available in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, a tourist destination in the north. (The International Telecommunication Union estimated that only 25 in 10,000 Cambodians were net users in 2003, one of the lowest internet-penetration rates in Asia.)
It also raises the uncomfortable possibility that these ancient teachings are being used to reinforce some of modern society’s uglier inequalities. Becoming successful, powerful, and influential can be as much about what you do outside the office as what you do at work. There was a time when that might have meant joining a country club or a Waspy church. Today it might mean showing up at TED. Looking around Wisdom 2.0, meditation starts to seem a lot like another secret handshake to join the club. “There is some legitimate interest among businesspeople in contemplative practice,” Kenneth Folk says. “But Wisdom 2.0? That’s a networking opportunity with a light dressing of Buddhism.”
“It seems that MapQuest never picks the shortest or fastest route, but the most convoluted one,” agreed Rachel Johnston, who has gotten lost using MapQuest in three different states. “Once you are lost in your MapQuest directions and you stop to ask a local, you are always told that they would have never sent you that way.”
Norsigian also worries about the need for human eggs to produce clones and the effect on women’s health.
He worked overtime to install the first system in Doubletree’s Kansas City hotel then turned his phone off to rest. As luck had it, those were the days President Clinton’s advance team were in town and staying at the hotel. When the key system failed, they were locked out of their rooms. Thomas turned his phone on a few days later to a series of shrill messages from the hotel manager. “Where are you? The computers are crashed, what are we going to do?!” Then: “You bastard! You son of a bitch! You’ll never work in this town again!”
“Around 30 percent of Australian children attend schools provided by religious organizations. Census information is important for planning these facilities,” the bureau said.
