The media tents and trailers are hundreds of yards from the conference hall. Because of the tight security, going back and forth can take some time.
Games have always served as a natural training tool for AI. They’re more contained than the real world, and there’s a clear system of rewards, so that AI agents can readily learn which actions to take and which to avoid. Games aren’t ends in and of themselves, but they’ve already helped create AI that has a meaningful effect on the real world. After building AI that can play old Atari games better than any human ever could, DeepMind used much the same technology to refine the operation of Google’s worldwide network of computer data centers, reducing its energy bill by hundreds of millions of dollars.
According to Badinter, the emphasis on bonding in obstetrics emerged from a study that two doctors, Marshall Klaus and John Kennell, performed in 1972 on 28 women. Convinced that women had the same instinctive behavior as other mammalian species, the two researchers observed that, “[In sheep, goats, and cows] Separation of the mother and infant immediately after birth for a period as short as one to four hours often results in distinctly aberrant mothering behavior such as failure of the mother to care for the young [or head butting or selective feeding].”

Naturally, this cultural thickening helped to feed the pulse of social media, accelerating our appetites for everything pop culture. (Twitter fattened as a result, ample proof of how we yearned for issues to discuss and argue over.) Anything we talked about, everything we talked about, felt explosive and urgent—until the next explosive, urgent thing happened.
After some pleading on my part, the company agreed to let me sit in on the trial, provided that I not tell any of the other test-takers that I was a reporter until after the test. This was to ensure that I didn’t make the volunteers nervous or otherwise affect their behavior, explained a spokesman for the company. I also couldn’t reprint entire questions from the test here, lest I give future test-takers an unfair advantage.
The country badly needs its business leaders and its government to answer those intractable questions. What it doesn’t need is another photo op.
