Brush Wellman said workers might not want to be screened because a positive test has negative side effects. Workers who test positive have “perceived decreased health and reduction in work/employment options with potentially adverse social and economic consequences.” The company does not reassign workers who test positive to prevent further exposure to beryllium because “There are no studies that suggest that individuals who have tested positive for beryllium sensitization are impacted by additional workplace exposure.”
Rep. Mark Foley, R-Florida, who is single, apologized Friday for letting down his family and constituents. Once his resignation letter was read to the House late Friday afternoon, Republicans spent the night trying to explain – six weeks before congressional elections – how this could have happened on their watch.
Suicide? A Microsoft (MSFT) manager accused of stealing $9 million worth of software to buy fancy cars, diamond rings and a yacht died from drinking antifreeze, the King County coroner reported.
“Their weapon of choice, the laptop, is easily available, and the ammunition, viruses and hacking programs, is free on the Internet,” he said.

In its most recent round of funding, Snap was valued at $17.8 billion, compared with Twitter’s market cap of $16.6 billion – in spite of a 25% jump in the news site’s stock on buyout rumors this past week.
Levinson’s family received this and other photographs of him in 2011, around the time his wife and son received a proof-of-life video of a scared Levinson. Levinson looked more robust on camera then, suggesting a variance in time between the photos and the video. The former FBI agent says on camera that he was “running out of diabetes medicine” and pled to Washington for aid: “Thirty-three years of service to the United States deserves something.”
This image is of the carbon dioxide ice cap at the south pole of Mars. The pattern is formed by the ice vaporizing. Scientists think that as the ice cap melts from the bottom up, the carbon dioxide turns directly into gas. It flows beneath the ice to openings, eroding the ground below into a spiderlike network of troughs. The flowing gas also carries dust that escapes with it and settles into fan-shaped deposits on top of the ice.
The bill would also require any business that fails to safeguard sensitive personal information to notify customers of data breaches and, potentially, pay a penalty of up to $11,000 per violation per day. The bill would also allow consumers to place a security freeze on their credit reports.
The submission system had been recrafted by the programmer, whom Domscheit-Berg refers to only as “the Architect”, after he became frustrated with the jerry-built infrastructure Assange, and perhaps others, had set up when Wikileaks launched in December 2006, according to the book. WikiLeaks had been running on a single server with sensitive backend components like the submission and e-mail archives connected to the public-facing Wiki page. The Architect separated the platforms and set up a number of servers in various countries.
A direct partnership with Amazon would allow Nike to exercise greater control over how its products are presented to potential customers – a critical element on digital sales platforms, Mann added.
In the worst case scenario, Google may now actually believe that Facebook could use all the social data it captures and keeps hidden from Google to create a search engine that eclipses Google’s flagship technology. That would be disastrous for Google. Perhaps that’s why the returned CEO Larry Page is betting so heavily on Google+ and personalized search — and why he decided to tear down the data firewalls.

But I think the real point here is that some people prefer not to confront 3-D unpleasantness, and others for some reason are more motivated to engage the “real” world.
Several promising new myeloma drugs have recently been released, including a new and improved follow-up treatment to Revlimid called Pomalyst. Each drug costs more than $150,000, and Pomalyst comes in over $195,000. “This is not a sustainable model,” says Brian Bolwell, chairman of the Taussig Cancer Institute at the Cleveland Clinic.
Tension has been mounting within WikiLeaks since July, when the organization went public with a U.S. Army database of 92,000 documents from the war in Afghanistan. WikiLeaks released 77,000 of the documents, temporarily holding back 15,000 records to redact the names of Afghan informants who might be at risk of Taliban reprisal. Despite the precaution, the names of some Afghan collaborators slipped out in the 77,000 records, earning WikiLeaks criticism from human rights organizations and the international free press group Reporters Without Borders, as well as the Pentagon. There has been no evidence to date, however, that anyone has suffered actual harm due to the documents.
There are new annoyances. It took me a while to get used to the pressure-sensitive home button in the screen, which remains lit up when the phone is locked, but isn’t carved into the glass like on an iPhone. And since the fingerprint reader is on the back next to the camera, I smudge the lens a lot. (This is a serious crime against photography, Samsung.) I would use the new iris reader or facial recognition capability to unlock, but they just aren’t fast enough on the fly.
Ari Schwartz, policy analyst for the Center for Democracy and Technology and supporter of data collection legislation, is more upbeat about its chances. He predicts that after debates over the budget and campaign finance reform, privacy is next – but adds “that’s not to say it’s definitely going to happen.”
