Drew was convicted on misdemeanor charges, but a judge subsequently threw out the verdict on grounds that the CFAA was constitutionally vague and that upholding the verdict would set a precedent for anyone who breaches similar contracts to be criminally prosecuted.
That changed when she began to work in tech as an adult. After an early career as a blogger and an author, Finney decided to try her hand at the world of startups. When she joined a New York-based tech incubator in 2006, she remembers a prominent venture capitalist telling her, “You know, I don’t do the black woman thing.” It was the first time, Finney says, that it seemed like someone didn’t believe she was capable just because of her gender and her race. At networking events, Finney would notice that she stood out. In a room full of 20,000 or so attendees at a tech conference, you’d see about 50 black people, she says.
I have a couple of complaints about Hero Recon from a builder’s point of view. If you are looking to design a Hero from the ground up, the site will not allow you to alter the skeleton. However, Design byME has been updated with new parts from the latest Hero Factory sets, allowing builders to make a Hero Factory model there without the limitations you encounter going through the Hero Recon site. Another problem is that only parts from last winter’s wave of sets are currently available in Hero Recon. Hopefully, when new sets are released in the summer more will be added.
On today’s episode of Fast Forward, we have Tim Chen, co-founder and CEO of NerdWallet, who I sat down with at the company’s San Francisco headquarters earlier this month to talk about making better financial decisions, the prudence of financial literacy, and how the fintech sector is going to evolve over time. Read or watch our full conversation below.
The move is part of Uber’s efforts to shake up the trucking industry. Last year, Uber acquired a start-up called Otto, which is working on self-driving technology for big rigs.
Even a stray comment could snowball into a campaign. When Inman spurned a random troll on Facebook, so many people took up virtual pitchforks that the guy dropped his account. “I felt bad,” Inman says. “I didn’t want to abolish the guy. I just wanted him to shut up.”
My point, which I’ll state here more clearly, is that rather than debating the real issue – what are the proper limits on the autonomous operations of weapons? – we are debating something a tad fantastical, an army of self-directing, lethal machines, deciding when they should kill or not. Terminators, in other words. I realize that debating Terminators is more fun, because it provides such sexy headlines as “Automated killer robots ‘threat to humanity,'” but I’m not sure it really addresses the main issue.
Stocks inched away from their all-time highs on Monday, kicking off a busy week in corporate earnings.
“I think the analysis has merit,” said political geographer Charles Schmitz of Towson University. “The food prices did disturb things. The legitimacy of the government was undermined.”
“There are clearly less-wasteful alternatives to marketing movies than disposable DVDs,” she said.
Enthusiast sites like BYODKM.net, which stands for “bring your own display, keyboard and mouse,” are popping up. Lots of sites, like PVRblog or MacMerc, are detailing how to turn a mini into a living-room digital video recorder.
Adelson: Oh sure. It keeps you on their site. And it will actually take you deeper into their site because the bar shows you related stories from that site as opposed to having to go back to Digg and do a search there.

A process called conching is employed next. Developed by Rudolph Lindt (I’m sure most chocolate lovers know that name) in the late 1800s, and so called because of the shell-like shape of the apparatus. Chocolate is poured into the conch and is constantly agitated by rollers, and warm air is circulated around the mass of chocolate. Conching yields two results. The agitation smooths out the particles of cocoa and sugar, and evenly distributes cocoa butter around them, lowering the viscosity of the chocolate and ultimately making it easier to pour and mold. The introduction of warm air forces some of the volatile acids to evaporate, which mellows the flavor of the chocolate and allows other flavors to become more pronounced. I and many small chocolate manufacturers combine the refining and conching steps into one process that involves particle reduction and conching in one process.
I’ve loved fractals since I was a kid. I remember writing lots of programs to generate them when I was in high school, including (just because I could) programming my graphing calculator to display a monochromatic version of the Mandelbrot set. Fractals are the perfect intersection of math and art, but they’re not easy for the average person to create on his/her own. I’ve tried out a few programs that are supposed to help build them, but until now I hadn’t found one that was very good.
• Christ, what fuckers. Best Buy has been nailed running a fake internal website advertising higher prices than on their website. Essentially, you see on Bestbuy.com a sweet deal, you rush over to the store to pick it up, and the sales person calls up the web page and shows you that you must have made a mistake: it’s a couple bills more. Don’t buy anything from Best Buy, people. At Gadget Lab.
“We went with a relatively small motor because our priority was to keep good pedaling performance, and only have electric assist. This has allowed us to keep the battery weight down and keep the solar panels a reasonable size,” Dixon said. “Consequently we geared it to not exceed 18 mph under power. This did not give us enough torque for the hills with a load though, so we have re-geared it for about 12 to 14 mph, and it now zips along nicely.”
The patch that prevents against infection by Code Red should be applied by anyone who runs Windows NT or Windows 2000 and Microsoft’s Internet Information Server (IIS) Web server software on their system.
However, not all marketing experts suspected Apple of ulterior motives. Alex Wipperfurth, principal of San Francisco marketing consultancy Plan B and author of the forthcoming book, Brand Hijack, said he thought it unlikely Apple sued for publicity. Even so, he said the lawsuit is a blunder.
“It’s managed to hold its own,” says Mulligan. “You look at the reach of radio, the number of people listening to the radio, it’s absolutely held its own for a long period of time.”
The Department of Justice has allocated $20 million for the purchase of body cameras for the nation. Designed to be Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliant and able to fit all service weapons and holsters nationwide, the Shield Weapon Camera is a viable alternative.
