So imagine trying to use this poison in a hair-based assassination plot. The odds of killing the plotters would be better than that of killing the Dalai Lama. And this seems to me to be one of the obvious weak points in such a would-be conspiracy. Most poisons that absorb through the skin are as likely to kill an assassin who had it drizzled through her hair as a person who briefly touched that hair. And a poison in which even a few spilled drops are deadly? Wouldn’t the fake followers end up as little more than a suspicious body count?
Still, there’s much more to this weekend’s election than the Taliban. For a crib sheet, check out our friend Joshua Foust’s overview for PBS. His bottom line: “Everyone Cheats.” Now, at least, we can see it happen, even if we can’t see it right as it happens.

What Really Happened: As the entertainment industry—and popular culture as a whole—continues to grapple with sexual harassment in general and the sexual harassment allegations against Harvey Weinstein in particular, one narrative has risen to the fore when it comes to men’s responses: the idea that, as the father of a daughter, they understand what women deal with. This tactic has not gone over well on Twitter.
Other bidders for the Thursday night streaming package included Google, Twitter and Facebook, according to a person familiar with the matter. A Twitter representative didn’t return a request for comment, while spokesmen for Google and Facebook declined to comment.
Amazon is running its web operation in much the same way it runs its famous retail business. Ultimately, EC2 is just selling a commodity. So many others can sell the same thing. In order to make it work, you have to operate on very low financial margins. “Amazon, from our retail upbringings, has this background and this comfort and this skill in running high-volume, low-margin businesses,” says Andy Jassy, who oversees EC2 and its sister Amazon Web Services. “We have that DNA.”
Callum seemed to think this small detail was the most hilarious aspect of the entire double top-secret design process for the GT. “It was physically a metal key,” he said, chuckling, clearly amused that a vehicle as high-tech as the GT—it’s made almost entirely of carbon fiber, and the fabrication techniques that went into building it allowed for some fairly outlandish curves and shapes—would be guarded by what was the state of the art for security in 1930.
Cleversafe CEO Chris Gladwin, a Chicago software designer with a knack for cryptography, says the secure method behind his technology has been known for a long time. Originally put forward in the 1979 paper How to Share a Secret, the idea is simple: Take some data, run it through a few mathematical algorithms, and end up with a bunch of pieces, several of which can re-create the original data but are meaningless on their own.
After revealing a loss of nearly half a million dollars in the first quarter of 2017, Etsy said it would replace longtime chair and CEO Chad Dickerson. The company cut 8 percent of its workforce and said it wouldn’t provide guidance on future earnings until August, when it hoped to have a better grip on its longer-term prospects.
AltspaceVR’s technology isn’t ready for a wide rollout, but the company is moving as fast as it can: it just opened signups for a limited alpha test of its mobile app, and for the rest of the week it’ll be announcing new functions for its mobile and desktop apps. Early among those, Romo promises, will be avatar customization. Not that it’s so bad being a robot—as long as it gets me out of taking an Uber across to town to watch a PowerPoint.
