When a galley of the cleverly titled iCon was sent to Apple for a quick fact-check, the company demanded the title be killed. But publisher John Wiley & Sons refused, so last month Apple pulled all the publisher’s books from the shelves of its retail stores.
In the government’s casting blame on WhatsApp for violence, critics and political opponents see an official strategy rife with contradictions. The ruling right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP—which Human Rights Watch accuses of promoting “Hindu supremacy and ultra-nationalism at the expense of fundamental rights for all Indians”—has created its own massive online presence.
The service, which only a handful of outsiders have seen, officially launches next Monday, May 18. But the project organizers are doing a soft launch starting this Friday, and are webcasting their efforts to fire up all engines for the first time.

For example, I have a credit card in another name from my credit-card company. It’s tied to my account, but it allows me to remain anonymous to merchants I do business with.
Zoogi has two components. The first is a website where players deposit money from their credit cards into a Zoogi account. The second is an instant messenger-type program that filters players, based on the games they like to play – any one-on-one game, from Scrabble to Age of Empires is OK – and the sites they like to play on.
Her biggest complaint was with the resolution of graphics, but for an author or freelancer on a budget who mostly generates text-heavy pdfs, she highly recommends it. “All in all, this is a very cool product,” Bilheimer said. “It’s always good to have competition in this world. Monopolies create lousy attitudes.”

To surf the web is to publicly share your browsing activity with online data collectors. Foil their plans by downloading HTTPS Everywhere. This browser extension for Chrome, Firefox, and Opera forces encrypted communication with tens of thousands of websites, including those that don’t use HTTPS by default.
D&D die-hard and occasional Geek Dad contributor Tavis Allison tells me that at this year’s Gen Con (Aug. 4-7), the fundraising for the monument begins in earnest. Gen Con, you see, was Gary’s baby.
While news websites in general saw a 3 percent increase in traffic between December 2002 and January 2003, the Guardian saw a 10 percent increase in visitors, Goosey said. Meanwhile, CNN’s website, one of the most popular news sites in the United States, saw a small decline in traffic.
“We don’t have the assets to go out and chase these 420,000 people ourselves,” said Department of Revenue spokesman Charles Willey.
