A truly cross-browser, cross-platform real-time alert system for the web is still a little ways off, but there is already a standard in the works and the W3C recently announced the first Public Working Draft of the Web Notifications API.
And finally the wine is ready to drink. I’ve no shortage of subjects willing to sample the new Chateau de Null 2007, and I’m outright shocked by the response, which ranges from “not bad” to “pretty good”
to exaltations of “Wow!” in the case of one new superfan. It’s young to be sure, richly tannic and a dark, inky maroon in color, but there’s life in this wine, and I’m surprised by how clearly the flavor of the original, unfermented grapes comes through in the finished product.
As the weeks dragged on, Team Themis decided to lower its price. It sent an e-mail to H&W, saying that the three companies were “prepared to offer our services as Team Themis at a significantly lower cost (much closer to the original “Phase I” proposed costs). Does this sound like a more reasonable range in terms of pricing?”
If you’re environmentally conscious and don’t mind spending a big $10,000 for a fun motorbike, there’s a manufacturer in the Swiss Alps that would love to have a talk with you. The Quantya FMX (Freestyle Motocross) and Quantya EVO1 are bikes that are (mostly) prohibitively expensive, but whose electric bent seeks to engage the green movement and the high-flying X-Games crowd.
“What’s particularly troublesome about this new variant of Code Red is its ability to open up an infected computer system completely to the Internet,” said Ian Hameroff, business manager of security solutions at Computer Associates. “This means an intruder could browse through and even download files from an infected Web server.”
Who Will Like It? People who like Balderdash and the dictionary game will enjoy this. It’s a bit like the “Bluff the Listener” section of “Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me!” where the panelists present one true news story and several fake ones and the listener has to guess which one is real. It takes a bit of quick on-your-feet thinking but if you have gamers who like to lie and bluff this will be a good one for you.
Sadly, ShmooCon is over and done for this year, but you can catch Brendan’s talk on YouTube:
“The reality is this is a democracy, not a republic, in the sense that the president has limited legislative ability. The president can’t do a lot of things, only Congress can do them and the president can lead Congress. So when you’re really looking for a president, you want a leader, you want somebody who can influence Congress and have a good idea where they are. Every one of the candidates, all 17 of them, had big position papers, page after page, 25 pages – those things don’t really make that much difference.”
Amazon spokesman Julio Gil declined to comment on plans for a new warehouse in Mexico. He said the company’s Mexican unit is aiming to expand its product offerings, offer faster deliveries and make the purchasing process as smooth and secure as possible to inspire consumer confidence.
