“Practically on the eve of OS X’s release, the shameless Microsoft thieves preview their new operating system XP. Gone are the Windows years; now it starts with ‘X’. And their new features are ripoffs of iTunes, iMovie, iDVD, AirPort, etc.”
The party that traveled to Svalbard found a peaceful and barren Arctic scene at their chosen confluence point. A half-kilometer away, however, they glimpsed a rare view of one of the more ferocious local inhabitants: a polar bear, resting in the snow.
Cutting the Wi-Fi uplink of Google Glass or most other surveillance gadgets doesn’t necessarily do much to prevent that sort of snooping, as long as it’s stored locally on the device. In fact, Cyborg Unplug wouldn’t even detect any Glass user who doesn’t attempt to connect to Wi-Fi. But Oliver argues that it would at least make it more difficult to surreptitiously stream video or images to a remote location without leaving evidence on the snoop’s local device. “A casino owner, for instance, might catch someone with some device and take it off them, but could never prove they were recording because they were streaming to somewhere else,” Oliver says.
The combined entity will specialize in entertainment tickets, local information and consumer services.
The next day, however, just before the wedding itself, Lee got a text about the purported cyberattack from Mike Assante, a security researcher at the SANS Institute, an elite cybersecurity training center. That got Lee’s attention: When it comes to digital threats to power grids, Assante is one of the most respected experts in the world. And he was telling Lee that the Ukraine blackout hack looked like the real thing.
But McGraw didn’t find any of these explanations satisfactory. “You need to add conditions to explain particular incidents of humor, and even then they still struggle,” he says. Freud is great for jokes about bodily functions. Incongruity explains Monty Python. Hobbes nails Henny Youngman. But no single theory explains all types of comedy. They also short-circuit when it comes to describing why some things aren’t funny. McGraw points out that killing a loved one in a fit of rage would be incongruous, it would assert superiority, and it would release pent-up tension, but it would hardly be hilarious.
CMOS DOS Virus is an evil virus indeed. Along with this seizure-inducing payload (and a shrieking beeping noise), it corrupts the CMOS memory, wiping all sorts of settings. The most diabolical bit? If you try to press Control Alt Delete, it reformats your whole hard drive. Image: danooct1
Tired: It is complicated to build with at first, and the directions are sorely lacking (though it is obvious that they tried very hard).
Phil Noble, founder of PoliticsOnline, a Web-based political consulting firm, said the movement to draft Clark, combined with the Net-based insurgent Democratic candidacy of former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, illustrates how the rules of American politics are being rewritten in real time.
Yes, the Taliban – which, The Guardian notes with proper British deadpan irony, tried to return Afghanistan to the Stone Age – is now using the very 21st-century invention Twitter to share its message in English, the language of the infidels it hopes to vanquish.
Bloggers do get a lot of fighting power, actually; they can put a front page report about how the state is screwing them and a million people will know it. But the state can’t stop them from publishing; the First Amendment makes sure of that.
Tokyo-based Toshiba Corp. needs cash from such a sale to shore up its finances after it suffered massive losses in its nuclear power division.
“Self-published shouldn’t be either an accolade or a put-down. It’s just what it is – another book that has as much potential to transport you as books published in other ways,” Richards said. “It’s the ideas that count.”
Do you, Jennifer Granick, by the act of opening this box of software, agree to the terms and conditions set forth on the 62-page legal document enclosed in this box and also available on our website, so help you God?
According to Cohen and Strigeus’ post, µTorrent’s future includes the release of Mac and Linux versions of the popular software, a development that will certainly enlarge BitTorrent’s user community.
“Steve grilled in all of us over many years that the company should revolve around great product, and that we should stay extremely focused on just a few things rather than try to do so many that we do nothing well. We should only go into markets where we can make a significant contribution to society, not just sell a lot of products. And so, these things, along with keeping excellence as an expectation of everything at Apple, these are the things that I focus on because I think those are the things that make Apple this magical place. We’re always focused on the future. We don’t sit and think about how great things were yesterday. I love that trait. I think it’s the thing that drive us all forward.”

They will be paid $50 per review. Sutherland said the site will display the fact that published reviews have been paid for, but authors or publishers who use the reviews in material will not be required to disclose that the review was paid for.
The easiest way to controll this effect further is by changing the shape of the opening on the front of your lens, and the Bokeh Masters Kit allows you to quickly and simply do just that. The kit consists of two parts, plastic disks with patterns laser cut into them and a flexible holder that wraps around the front of your lens. The disks are inserted into the holder and only allow light to enter the lens through the shape in the plastic disk. In this way the subject is still lit properly and in focus, but the bokeh is affected by the shape. So instead of a bunch of pentagons in the background, you could have a bunch of hearts as shown in the above image.
Lungren said the main standard put forth by the legislation regards verifying that people obtaining a state ID card are legally present in the state. He said 41 states currently have such requirements that meet the Real ID Act standard.
“It brought a whole new user group, a whole new set of listeners in touch with podcasting,” said self-styled “Podfather” Adam Curry, who is believed to have coined the word “podcast” and whose Daily Source Code show is cited as inspiration by many first-generation podcasters. “I remember how excited we were at the time.”

Murza, a 17-year-old from the Khayr Khana neighborhood of Kabul, once had to support his family by bringing in extra cash as a car washer, but now he works at Skateistan, cleaning up the facility as well as training other would-be skaters. For him, the violence has become part of his daily routine – “It’s been happening throughout my life, and it will continue into the future” – but Skateistan’s mere existence has given him hope that better days are ahead.
However, the biggest flaw with the experience doesn’t have anything to do with the app itself. Cyclemeter unfortunately lacks an online component to make accessing this information easier. RunKeeper, an app I reviewed last year, has an excellent website that acts as a portal to your historical data, which also delivers in-depth fitness information, although at an additional cost. RunKeeper itself is $10 and the monthly fitness reports run an additional $5 per month or $20 per year.
Even now the domain is sketchy, so that typing in Craigslist.cm sends you to one of a revolving number of sites that are definitely not Craigslist. (The behavior got so bad, that the alternative DNS provider OpenDNS even has an option for any address you submit ending with .cm in it, to automatically change it to .com).
Sutton’s company, Catchword, which is, of all things, a corporate branding consultant, learned its lesson a few years ago when it went to register the domain “catchword.com.” The California company found the name had already been taken by a British electronic publisher and it had to settle for the hyphenated second choice “catch-word.com.”
EBookMan is multilingual: Franklin Electronic Publishers has introduced a French/German/English edition of their eBookMan multimedia device. Included in the eBook reader is a music player, audible book player and full-function organizer using natural handwriting recognition.
Worse than all of this, though, is the animated splash screen that plays every time you launch the app. Unlike the zooming screenshot displayed by every app automatically by every app, this animation has no other purpose but to annoy you, and waste a few seconds of your life. It should be removed.
“Well, you can never be absolutely sure,” he said. “We found clips with similar techniques, like Boone Oakley’s website and Kokokaka’s “Play the Piano” video. But no clip that involves an interactive mixing of music and video. I’m quite sure this is the first one and that’s why we claimed it.”
I’m a relic, and things were a lot different when I was fifteen and sixteen. There were no cell phones, no laptops . . . I learned to type on an actual typewriter. And we had plenty of things to distract us, but things have changed so much.
As it became clear that it was losing the social networking arms-race to Facebook, MySpace shifted its focus toward entertainment, particularly music. Thousands of bands – including many small, independent bands – continue to use the site to connect with their fans.
But unlike the now ubiquitous Facebook and the ever-growing Twitter, in front of Foursquare looms a significant hurdle. Foursquare mainly seems to appeal to a specific, limited crowd of young urbanites, a fact of which the founders are painfully aware. Even Ma and Pa are are using Facebook (albeit to the chagrin of their children). But many who hear about Foursquare can’t seem to find the answer to, “Why should I?” From the outside, it appears to be built for popular people with an active nightlife, which immediately alienates, well, the majority, who don’t.
