Unfortunately, as well-meaning as they are, these gestures aren’t likely to have much of an impact on the world’s overall energy consumption – at least not until major data centers begin to follow the lead of the boutiques. And that’s not going to happen anytime soon, say energy analysts.
Reed Hastings and Netflix now need their equivalent of a Windows 7 moment — plus Windows Phone 7, Xbox Kinect and Windows 8 moments, if they have those handy — for this series to rebound from the bad scripting this season and still have a happy ending.
“We’re taking advantage of all the Unix stuff,” he said. “We’re very impressed with the Unix tools that can run from command line.”
During the Macworld keynote, Apple VP of marketing Phil Schiller called the iWork.com beta “the beginning of a great new service,” which we can take as a sign that Apple could build online editing and other features into the service at a later date.
Rosemary Jacobs’ skin turned gray when she was a teenager and has stayed that way for five decades.
“While doing my job, I learned that fiber optic cables from the secret room were tapping into the Worldnet (AT&T’s internet service) circuits by splitting off a portion of the light signal,” Klein wrote.
And reader Steve Reed piped in to suggest that I check out competitive Street Fighter play. He says that Street Fighter IV brought in a lot of young blood, but there are tons of older players looking for a match in the old-school fighting game.
For years, piracy persisted mainly in the realm of torrents, with sites like The Pirate Bay and Demonoid connecting internet denizens to premium content gratis. But a confluence of factors have sent torrent usage plummeting from 23 percent of all North American daily internet traffic in 2011 to under 5 percent last year. Legal crackdowns shuttered prominent torrent sites. Paid alternatives like Netflix and Hulu made it easier just to pay up. And then there were the “fully loaded” Kodi boxes—otherwise vanilla streaming devices that come with, or make easily accessible, so-called addons that seek out unlicensed content—that deliver pirated movies and TV shows with push-button ease.
“We went to great efforts to make it not like any commercial product,” said Williamson. “There are already plenty of commercial product certifications out there that can measure how adept you are at using software. But what we’re trying to target is providing only the minimal software functionality that’s required to get the task done.”
Earlier this week, I met with Firchau to get an early look at the new Movi gimbal. He brought with him a couple of the five 3D-printed prototypes and plopped one of them down on the table outside a local coffee shop. The Movi is about seven or eight inches wide, and a little taller than an iPhone 8 Plus. The mount for your iPhone connects to one side of a flat base; the other side has a grip with a slew of buttons and triggers. You clip your iPhone into the mount, pair it to the Movi using Bluetooth, then open the Movi app to start shooting.
That sensor could be upgraded to a higher-resolution version that could handle 3-D mapping for facial recognition, said Jim Morrison, vice president at TechInsights.
The App Store: our process of approving apps. Some facts: “We get about 15,000 apps submitted every week…. And they come in in up to 30 different languages that we support. 95% of all the apps we get submitted are approved within seven days.” The number one reason things get rejected: the app doesn’t function as advertised by developer. Use of private APIs is another reason – causes apps to break. The third reason we reject apps: they crash.
In a Monday decision, Judge James Ware of U.S. District Court in San Jose ordered Stephen Michael Cohen – the man who has claimed title to the porn site sex.com for the last five years – to return the coveted domain name to its original owner, San Francisco entrepreneur Gary Kremen.

“The probability that a crash will happen is there, but so far, I have been careful,” he says.
The cloud is becoming an attractive feature for business owners, enabling them to run operations from anywhere in the world and at faster speeds. Just last week IBM pledged $1 billion to commercialize its Watson supercomputer, including $100 million that will fund a recently launched startup ecosystem to incubate new businesses that run on Watson’s cloud-based cognitive intelligence and SoftLayer.
In addition to its availability as a universal binary application for Mac OS X, the beta release will be compatible with both Microsoft Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems.
“What we’re seeing today is the outcome of years of lack of attention and disinvestment,” says Veronica Vanterpool, executive director of the Tri-State Transportation Campaign, which advocates for better transportation. The problems plaguing a 104-year-old system that moves nearly 6 million people each day run deep. Uprooting them requires a lot of money, dedication, and time.
“Miraculin must be taken before eating. It should not be mixed into food,” said professor James Kalat of North Carolina State University’s psychology department. “Back when it was possible to get miraculin tablets, my wife and I got together with another couple for a miraculin party. We used the miraculin tablets, then started trying every sour thing we could find. I remember straight lemon juice as being pretty good. I also tried vinegar and sauerkraut juice. Those did not taste good. The next morning we awakened with ulcers in our mouths, barely able to talk. Sure, these things tasted sweet, but they were still highly acidic.”
The second problem with such a linking policy – even if there is a legal basis for it, which, again, critics insist there isn’t – is that by necessity, enforcement of such a policy can only be arbitrary at best, because NPR, an organization whose expenses in 2000 were a mere $122 million, could not possibly have the resources to monitor the thousands of links to it on the Web.
The deal would put IAC (IACI) into the highly competitive and rapidly growing business of internet search, which is dominated by big players like Google (GOOG), Yahoo (YHOO) and Microsoft’s MSN service.

The advantage of handing off your identity to the browser in this case is that Firefox literally knows who you are. When you launch Firefox with the add-on installed, you log in to Weave, which stores your various identities – including your OpenID – on a remote server of your choosing. The Weave add-on is then able to log you in wherever you go with a single click. It can even bypass the login form altogether when you visit a trusted site, handling everything in the background. While Weave’s implementation of the OpenID sign-on flow offers a much better user experience than most websites currently do, OpenID isn’t the only option in the video. Traditional username/password logins are also supported, and those are handled using a similar, everything-in-the-background approach.
