Reviewing the iTunes catalog, I began to think this challenge wouldn’t be so hard. The good children’s shows that any parent would recognize – Dora the Explorer, The Backyardigans and Blue’s Clues – had at least one season available. The broadcast and cable network programs my wife and I watch – Heroes, Battlestar Galactica, Jericho and The Daily Show – were also offered. Thanks to Steve Jobs, we wouldn’t miss a single cylon being fragged.
Best Novella winner Nancy Kress was also a repeat performer, adding a Hugo for her 2009 tale The Erdmann Nexus to her 1992 award for Beggars in Spain.
“The president pledged to reverse this type of federal overreach in which bureaucrats in Washington take the interest of one group of companies over the interest of others,” picking the winners and losers, he said.
Four states are serving as test markets for the 48-hour DVDs, called EZ-Ds. The product is vacuum-packed; once opened, the disc will play for two days before a resin on the DVD reacts with the atmosphere, rendering it unplayable.
As evidence, he points to the growing popularity of the mobile version of Chrome. This morning, as Google releases the latest incarnation of its browser, the company has revealed that a billion people now use Chrome on mobile devices each month—about the same number that use it on desktops and laptops.
What Michael seemed to have remembered was that he’d woken up during surgery decades earlier—that he was conscious when doctors removed that tumor. It’s impossible to know if the memory is real, although the phenomenon, called anesthesia awareness, is documented, and one of its consequences is PTSD. When I asked if Michael doubted the memory’s veracity, he said that what led him to believe the memory was true were the details he wouldn’t know to make up, like the oily plastic odor of the operating room and the cigarette smell on one nurse’s breath.
In some ways, if we’re relying on airport screeners to prevent terrorism, it’s already too late. After all, we can’t keep weapons out of prisons. How can we ever hope to keep them out of airports?
Unlike previous Halo titles, ODST focuses on the human side of mankind’s war against the Covenant. As a result, the concept art shows a distinct lack of super-human Master Chiefs, instead focusing on infantry-level combat.
Was it true? Eh … maybe? At the time, Zuckerberg called it fictional (and later “hurtful”) and the company’s PR team ran some countermeasures in the lead-up to its release without ever really attacking the film itself. It was based on actual news and court cases, so it wasn’t as if director David Fincher and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin created the thing from whole cloth. But there were, clearly, dramatic flourishes, the least of which is the fact that no one actually speaks the way Sorkin writes. Instead, The Social Network was, as so many of these films are, an amalgamation of truths, fiction woven together from fact.
Perhaps the final blow to Amazon’s momentum came when the world decided that the Seattle company, despite its pretensions to be a one-firm new economy revolution, was, in the end, merely a website that sells stuff.
As for Ballmer, he’ll be busy teaching classes this fall, and just last week, he completed his much-discussed acquisition of the Los Angeles Clippers NBA basketball franchise. We’ll all miss the rather unique antics Ballmer brought to Microsoft, but you can bet that much of this will resurface in the NBA.
Neighbors helped neighbors, and detailed plans were in place. Folks who knew each other also knew who would need assistance, who had transportation, who needed medications. The neighborhood evacuations were disbanded during the Reagan administration, Richardson said, in favor of mass evacuations to central locations or out of the city.
“I consider it a privilege to sit in a cell with these kids for an hour and listen to their stories,” says Ross. “Every time I went in to a cell I’d sit on the floor. I’ve a terrible back, but I’d sit on the concrete floor so the kid was above me and had the visual authority to realize that I was subordinate to he or she, and I took direction from them.”
This year, we may see Comcast introduce its own live internet TV service—but this will come with many of the same caveats as DirecTV Now. Internet TV run by the cable companies isn’t internet TV. —Davey Alba
Among the more popular tracking options are those that are often marketed for monitoring the whereabouts of children, such as Trick or Tracker or Phone Tracker. Another, mSpy, is marketed as a “user-friendly application for watching over your kids, preventing theft, and supervising your employees’ performance,” according to the company’s website. For $39.99 a month, mSpy can collect keystrokes, screenshots, GPS location data, call and text logs and information exchanged using SnapChat.
In fact, there are few geek icons Pegg hasn’t had the pleasure of meeting. His list (just off the top of my head) includes: Carrie Fischer, Lou Ferrigno, Gillian Anderson, Peter Jackson, George Lucas, Steven Speilberg, and George Romero, among others.
In the meantime, here’s what can be said of The Met’s rebranding. Until now, communication has been a weak spot for the New York institution, which has 1.5 million works of art and 400 galleries that span 5,000 years and fill a 2.2 million-square-foot Beaux-Arts building on Fifth Avenue. There’s an outpost at the Cloisters, in upper Manhattan1, and another opening on the Upper East Side in a building, designed by Marcel Breuer, that housed The Whitney until it moved into the Meatpacking District. The Met is a massive institution, but it’s never had a clear and consistent set of visuals bringing it all together.
When I heard Apple Computer had released iTunes for Windows, naturally I wanted to try it (“ITunes, Now for the Rest of Us,” Oct. 16, 2003). I went to the company’s homepage for the download and snickered at the iTunes-trumpeting headline: “Hell Freezes Over.”
