But it is not just shopper fumbling that makes the transactions more time-consuming. The length of the transactions also varies among merchants based on how the payment terminals are configured, the speed of the connection, and whether the terminals prompt the shopper on how to make the payment, merchants and payment executives say.

Let’s follow the wiring to make sure we know what’s going on. Oh, a quick warning. This is an older analog meter. It only measures the electric current in one direction. If you hook it up the wrong way, the needle will get “pegged” at the zero mark—that’s not useful and it could possibly bend the needle. Just be careful.
The winners will join Charon, Pluto’s largest moon, named after the boatman who ferried souls across the river Styx; Hydra, named after the nine-headed serpent who battled Hercules, and Nix, named after the shadowy goddess of the night.
Most residents are just beginning to toy with the idea of using the Internet to conduct business. After years of always-on broadband or wireless service, we’re reacquainting ourselves with the phone jacks on our laptops, and we rejoice when the connection speed even approaches 56K.
Rossy, an extreme sports guy who has spent years assembling his wings, casually stepped out of an airplane at 7,500 feet, unfolded the wings and quickly passed from free fall to mellow glide. He then fired up the wings’ engines and accelerated to more than 180 mph.
Riley Russell, Sony’s general counsel, said in a statement that the console maker brought the litigation “to protect our intellectual property and our consumers. We believe this settlement and the permanent injunction achieve this goal.”
1:29 p.m. After a grueling desert journey, our tank has arrived at the enemy compound. We’re getting hit a lot, going in and out of vision as we make our way through the base, trying to take out as many baddies as possible. Looks like we have to destroy the compound’s rocket battery. BOOM. The rocket battery is no more.
One big caveat. I had not seen, used, or built either of these guns, or any other items on the site, so I can’t vouch for their performance. If you have experience with these or similar, let me know.

Young, who has long been suspicious of WikiLeaks’ motives, began publishing the tips this spring, despite expressing doubts publicly about their veracity. The tips prompted the ire of WikiLeaks, which referred to them as a “smear campaign” and has disputed that the sources are insiders.
“We are proponents of the fact that technology can and will change the way people use media, but the revolution hasn’t happened yet,” said Chris Murray, legislative counsel for Consumers Union.
Bitcoin powers all of these budding anonymous bazaars, making it a point of vulnerability in the quest for truly anonymous markets. Indeed, the cryptocurrency created by Satoshi Nakamoto and launched in 2009 has never been the perfectly untraceable payment system that some naive criminals believe it to be.
Patrick Smith, a pilot and author of Salon’s “Ask the pilot” column, says a tailplane stall is one likely cause of the Colgan crash, but not the only one. “(It’s) conjecture at this point, but it’s certainly plausible,” he says in a column discussing the crash. “As is the chance that the tailplane de-icing system may have malfunctioned. Or maybe the icing event was so extreme that the entire plane was overwhelmed.”
“ICan is true to the public service of the BBC in that it encourages civic education. But it can also be slightly patronizing,” Bryant said. “Main national issues are sacrosanct for the BBC and reporters, but this site, geared for the masses, is only local issues.”
But it was at the next game company he founded, Warp, that Eno would make a name for himself, designing creepy, sometimes shocking horror games, the most popular of which was D. Released early in the life of CD-ROM gaming systems like the 3DO, PlayStation and Sega Saturn, D made extensive use of full-motion video sequences to create its grotesque images. Eno later said in an interview with 1up that he deliberately misled the game’s publisher to get his game manufactured with no censorship: He created a fake “clean” version of D, which he submitted late, knowing that meant he would have to personally fly the game’s gold master disc to America for manufacturing. While on board the plane, he swapped the disc out for his uncensored version and handed it off.
Jacobson: I agree completely. It’s all about the content. If you don’t have compelling content, then no matter how sweet the application is nobody’s going to want to come and get it. I think that NPR, like The New York Times, offers a rich, unique spin on the content we provide. In terms of the functionality of the API, one of the interesting things we’re offering is a very comprehensive way of slicing through the data. If you go to NPR.org, for example, you’re getting NPR’s presentation of our data. It’s our compilations and our topic structures. Through the API, users can come and slice the content however they want it, create their own custom feeds and we’ll leave it up to them to build exactly what they want. Things we couldn’t even envision.
Wired: Would your retirement decision have been different if HP had pushed ahead with a PC division spin-off?
I got a preliminary taste of something that’s going to be really important in the future: How do we tell these narratives in a way that builds trust and mutual engagement between key stakeholders? I had that exact same conversation at another company. They asked me if I’d help them with their labor relations. They were having this acrimonious negotiation with their union, and they used Lean Startup.
The attack they described was almost identical to the one that hit Kyivoblenergo: BlackEnergy, corrupted firmware, disrupted backup power systems, KillDisk. But in this operation, the attackers had taken another step, bombarding the company’s call centers with fake phone calls—possibly to delay any warnings of the power outage from customers or simply to add another layer of chaos and humiliation.
However, there is some debate about the profitability of soccer. In Spain, soccer was expected to be the killer app. But according to Alvarez, the soccer clubs keep hiking their prices. This has further eroded the profit margin and limited the appeal among consumers so much that CSD has pushed back its break-even date to later this year, instead of at the end of 2000.
