Joshua Dratel, the lawyer representing Ulbricht, says he wasn’t consulted on the sale. But he speculates that the feds may have timed their auction to capitalize on a recent uptick in bitcoin’s price. The cryptocurrency hit $665 per bitcoin earlier this month before sliding below $600 in recent days. “I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re watching the price of bitcoin on the market just like everyone else,” he said.
John Locker in Wirral, England, uses a computer-controlled telescope with a video camera to track satellites. The amateur astronomer captured his most recent trophy last Wednesday, when he took a video of the space station as it flew in front of the Sun.
During the past decade, the two have partnered on high profile crimes including the investigation of the Boston Marathon Bombings in 2013 and are working within Nevada to crackdown on human trafficking. “Over this 10 year period, passersby who saw our digital billboards have called in tips that led to the apprehension of over 50 wanted fugitives” said King referencing a letter from the FBI reviewed by FOX Business.
While I was doing GeoJSON web tutorials, Herwig was following up on a lead he’d picked up several months ago at a Mars hack-a-thon in San Francisco. “I met a few people from the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Team there, and someone showed me this live feed,” he says. The feed is images from the rover’s various cameras. Herwig had hoped each image would be geotagged, but he was out of luck. However, he had a hunch that there might be location data somewhere on the MSL’s site directory. Using some creative Googling techniques, he found a file in the MSL directory that was simply called “locations.xml.”
When a local newspaper reported that the Burger King staff had started cooking vast quantities of food when the mob showed up, and then the food went to waste when the mob left suddenly, mob organizer Monty called the Burger King to ask if the mob had caused any problems. According to reports posted on the mob’s mailing list, the manager said the loss was quite limited and there were no hard feelings.
Cohen charged that the blog comments harmed her career and caused potential clients to question her suitability to represent their products. Port’s lawyer argued that the posts in question amounted to nothing more than vague insults on par with calling someone a “jerk.”
Sony Corp. reported Friday a January-March profit of 27.7 billion yen ($250 million) on the back of healthy sales of image sensors, PlayStation 4 game software and batteries for mobile devices, marking a recovery from its red ink a year ago.
I hear a couple of other GeekMoms will be in attendance, so we’ll have to have a geek meet for sure. If you’re going too, leave a comment and let us know!
Hello, world! Welcome to the new GeekMom blog. We consist of four active geek mom editors—Natania Barron, Kathy Ceceri, Corrina Lawson, and Jenny Williams—and a gaggle of geek mom contributors, led by the publisher of the popular GeekDad blog, Ken Denmead. We have a vision of what this site will be: a source of geeky news, opinion, and information; a safe place to be yourself; and a community of geeky people with both similar and varied experiences. September 1st is our soft launch while we work out the kinks and streamline our processes. We’re also looking for input from you, our readers, about what you’d like to see here. Take a look around our beta site and let us know what you think. Our formal launch date is October 1, so stay tuned for exciting features, surprise guests, and lots of giveaways and contests!
Come and get ’em: Baen Books is offering some its titles in electronic format, for free.
When she began to research the chapter on modern mummification, she visited cryogenic labs, expecting to find that the client list would include “your new-age crowd, people with strange ideas about the body and soul and maybe with bizarre beliefs about immortality and eternity. Kind of a well-heeled version of the folks who believe Elvis lives.”
Stipulated, social media does not always make us our best selves. Without Kapoor saying one way or the other, no one can tell whether he meant that Insta as a good-natured “back atcha” or a bad-natured “fuck you.” But you might have noticed that, like chatbots, aggregated social media does not deal well with subtlety or irony, no matter an individual user’s intent.
For all that, it’s not meant to express any particular political point of view. “It’s not anti- anything,” Wood says. “It’s an homage to youth, when you’re staying up late, going to smoky jazz bars, still trying to find your political allegiances.” The prominent face of a young woman near the top of the map symbolizes romance.
It’s a common frustration: You set out to build a perfect replica of Babylon 5 (or whatever), only to find that you don’t own enough gray plates for the twin particle arrays. It doesn’t have to be this way. Now there’s Lego Factory, a service that lets you create your very own Lego set.
A reportedly rogue Russian web hoster accused of being home to the web’s worst scams says it’s clean, but that its vocal and well-respected critics are anything but. Anti-spam group Spamhaus won’t follow its own rules and strongarms innocent ISPs into violating contracts, while Verisign’s research arm pumps out security misinformation to justify its security contracts with its customers, the company charges.
Maximum Distance. Minimum Displacement grew out of Hemphill’s ongoing project, Hip Hop Word Count, in which the designer/artist/scholar created a database culled from more than 50,000 hip hop songs dating back to 1979. Using algorithms Hemphill developed, the database is able to filter words based on frequency, chronological use, and in this case, geographic mentions. Hemphill extracted the geographic locations found in 12 hip hop artists’ work, down to the nuanced meanings of “home.” He translated that data into coordinates and programmed a robotic arm from to draw to those points. “For several minutes at a time, the robot arm drew the paths while holding a light pen producing sculptural forms made with light,” he explains. “Each unique shape represents the global distance travelled by the lyrics in each artist’s career.”
It’s time that things change. Companies owe it to their customers to make more of an effort to make our day-to-day experiences as comfortable as possible; or else, like me, people won’t even be able to contemplate buying their products, ironically, because their products hurt them in the first place.
“We are harnessing the enthusiasm that Google has generated all over the country for fiber and channeling that into a path to help those communities to get the broadband they want,” Settles said.
