He realized he had to try again. A couple years later, in 2010, after years in the world of technology and product development, Dorman’s son Sam decided to join him. Sam had noodled around with video and thought that might make a difference. “I think I just thought, maybe I can help my dad a little. He writes beautiful letters and beautiful papers, and he has a lot of faith in their ability to sway people,” Sam says. “But I thought if I could bring more modern, visual storytelling to this that it might be helpful.”
(Incidentally, there’s a reason why this image was released first by the folks at Entertainment Weekly. EW clearly gets first dibs on all Hobbit official image leaks and other goodies because, guess what, EW is owned by Time, Inc. – part of the Time Warner empire, which also runs New Line Cinema, the studio that’s co-releasing the film with MGM. So no surprise there.)
Those buttons are for people who use aggregators (sometimes called newsreaders or RSS readers). These programs are hybrids of a Web browser and an e-mail client, allowing Web users to peruse hundreds of information sources in one place. Instead of surfing dozens of sites for the latest news or blog postings, aggregators let people read headlines from those sources in one window.
We’ll never know how important Anonymous was for Tunisia, but Tunisia changed everything for Anonymous. OpTunisia was the first of what became the Freedom Ops, which focused largely on other Middle Eastern countries during the Arab Spring but spread much farther. For the first time, Anonymous had gotten on the winning side of a real fight, and it liked the feeling.

Just a year ago I received an email from Kristian von Bengtson at Copenhagen Suborbitals – Shall we work together? he asked. I eagerly accepted the challenge of equipping Copenhagen Suborbitals with a pressure suit for their first pilot, and went into a building and testing blitz, preparing our prototype suit, which I’d designed, built and tested between 2009 and 2013, for a visit to Copenhagen.
The pre-owned Model S sedans come from owners who have traded them in—mostly to upgrade to the dual-motor P85D. They are available for sale in 11 markets, including New York, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Florida, and the Bay Area (of course). Before you ask, you don’t get a new battery. You do, however, get a four-year, 50,000-mile limited warranty, plus the remainder of the original eight-year, infinite mile warranty that covers the battery and drive unit. So if the lithium-ion pack under your feet craps out, you’ll probably be covered.
“The business model for year one of the iPhone was a disaster,” Tony Fadell, one of the Apple developers of the device, told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday. “We pivoted and figured it out in year two.”
As Violin, Fusion-io, and other startups push flash, so too are the giants of the industry. IBM and HP have worked with Fusion-io to build flash devices for their servers. EMC has long offered its own breed of PCIe-based flash gear as well as flash arrays. And with the acquisition of XtremIO, Joe Tucci and company are pushing even further into this market.
But amid the celebration, there are some who weren’t so much against Napster – or file-trading in general. Some don’t even bicker with the notion of free music online.
Additionally, there are detailed images of Apollo 12, Apollo 17, and many other lunar features. These images bring the Apollo landings closer than they have been in the 37 years since the crew of Apollo 17, the final Apollo lunar mission, left the Moon. Hopefully, bringing these achievements of the past into the present will help to inspire both the current and the next generations of scientists and engineers around the world.
When representatives of BullGuard approached me in early December for a review of their program, I told them I needed at least a month of using the program before I could judge how effective it was.

According to his website, Nikolas Toocheck began running at age 5 with his father, who maintains a running regimen to keep up with his Air Force Reserves physical fitness requirements. From his first 5K on his own two feet at age 6, Nikolas was hooked and began to take part in longer and longer races. He ran his first marathon in Delaware this past December. He and his family discussed how marathons take place worldwide in many assorted climates, and from that grew Nikolas’s goal: to run one marathon on each of the seven continents.
“Use the built-in features of your access point,” Hurley said. “Implementation is easy and information on how to (use them) is readily available, including at the WWWD website.”
It is unclear and uncertain how much information published by the North Korean government about Pyongyang’s tube system is true. There are little available maps of the system and those published are inconsistent with each other. There are two lines, but sources speculate the existence of several concealed government-only subway tunnels, since the metro company bought twice the minimum number of rail cars needed to operate the subway from the Changchun Car Company of China.
“When the competition is ‘who can hire the most attorneys to determine where the case gets filed, in order to drag things out’, it becomes clear that this isn’t about competition and the consumers. I don’t want to go X-Files, but come on.”
Facebook maintains that its data-tracking benefits users also. The Onavo VPN “acts as a secure connection to protect people from potentially harmful sites,” product manager Erez Naveh says. “The app may collect your mobile data traffic to help us recognize tactics that bad actors use. Over time, this helps the tool work better for you and others. We let people know about this activity and other ways that Onavo uses and analyses data before they download it.”
iMovie also gets a few minor updates, including the ability to open multiple projects at once and the ability to create video podcasts. It’ll also let you create widescreen DVD menus in a slightly easier drag-and-drop interface.
The contract is for “mentoring, training, and logistics services” to backstop Ferrari’s efforts, placing security contractors in embedded positions with the Afghan interior ministry and police units themselves, according to the terms of the bid. More than 80 firms have registered as “interested vendors” on the federal website announcing the contract. NATO is trying to build a 134,000-strong Afghan police force by October, and it’s short 900 trainers promised by U.S. allies.
“Many news organizations, facing competition from digital outlets, have sharply reduced the size of their newsrooms and their investment in news gathering,” writes Times executive editor Dean Baquet. “But The New York Times has not. We have our subscribers to thank for that.”
Amazon has a lot of data on us too, but its data is considered a little more benign; it’s likely to be the things we’re shopping for as opposed to our 3 a.m. worries of “is this infected?” (Yes, if you keep picking at it.) We’re a little more willing to welcome Alexa into our homes than to give Google yet another eye or ear. If there isn’t that much difference in functionally between Google’s and Amazon’s products, that makes a lot of difference.
In July, the National Academy of Sciences and six other science organizations around the world urged companies to license their proprietary technologies to the developing world.
“I’m afraid that we’ve been distracted from the issue of why we spend so much more than others,” he explained. “This should be a technocratic thing, not a partisan thing, why this system is not working as efficiently as it could.”
After a small landing-gear incident with the mother ship Eve back in August, the team is moving forward with flight testing. According to the company website, the latest flight of Eve yesterday included a dry run of the SpaceShipTwo release and several simulated SS2 approaches to the runway.
And what if you could capture a smidgeon of that experience with a photo or a few sentences and share it with other families across the world, creating a cascading waterfall of inspiration and respect – a different way of relating in cyberspace. What if we could create a safe place for your family where every child’s contribution was special and featured? What if we could be real families and real children sharing freely, instead of pixels wandering around buying extra tokens to upsize our avatar?
