BioHeat has several advantages over conventional heating oil: The fuel burns cleaner and releases fewer harmful emissions, and it relies on domestic sources of renewable energy – mostly soybeans. That means BioHeat is less harmful to the environment and reduces national dependence on foreign oil. Switching all heating-oil customers to 5-percent biodiesel could reduce oil consumption by more than 330 million gallons a year; changing to 100-percent biodiesel (B100) would decrease it by 6.7 billion gallons a year.
And JWST will be a much, much better telescope than Hubble, and not just because it has the benefit of decades-better technology. Not only will it be in a much higher orbit than Hubble, but it will be substantially larger and thus able to collect considerably more detailed and more distant observations. Scientists have some educated guesses as to what kinds of discoveries JWST could make, but it’s very likely that, as it was with Hubble, many things it will find are so revolutionary they’re simply beyond our ability to predict.
I was definitely surprised to see that the iPhone 5 is lighter than the Galaxy s3. I’ve held my mom’s Galaxy phone before and that sucker is pretty light.
Under typical U.S. defense contracts, fees are tied to performance (thus giving the contractor an incentive to keep costs down). Defense Solutions gets its fee, regardless. And with an 8 percent fee, the more you spend, the more you earn. This would be a most unusual arrangement, at least in the United States, where cost plus percentage-of-cost contracts are prohibited under U.S. law. As federal acquisition regulations state quite clearly: “The cost-plus-a-percentage-of-cost system of contracting shall not be used (see 10 U.S.C. 2306(a) and 41 U.S.C. 254(b)).”
AT&T has a calculator on its website to help users decide how much information they’d use in a month and which plan to subscribe to. But as IDC analyst Randy Gistro pointed out, customers are used to the “all-you-can-eat” minutes contracts they’ve signed.

“B.B. King once told me, ‘If you really want something, you bring cash,'” says Shapiro. So he showed up for his meeting with Plant carrying a brown bag stuffed with $50,000 in bills. That was the deposit. Weeks later, Plant took the stage just after midnight at Shapiro’s long-running Brooklyn Bowl venue, where he performed Zeppelin classics like “Black Dog” and “Going to California” for a crowd of about 800.
But Kobeissi also knows that it’s equally important that Cryptocat be usable and pretty. Kobeissi wants Cryptocat to be something you want to use, not just need to. Encrypted chat tools have existed for years — but have largely stayed in the hands of geeks, who usually aren’t the ones most likely to need strong crypto. “Security is not just good crypto. It’s very important to have good crypto, and audit it. Security is not possible without (that), but security is equally impossible without making it accessible.”
You’ll need Wings of Liberty to play Heart of the Swarm, but Blizzard says the price will reflect the game’s limited content and expansion pack branding. As for the game’s release date – Blizzard is using its tried-and-tested company line. “We will take as much time as is needed to ensure that Heart of the Swarm meets the expectations of our players, as well as our own high standards.”
Maheesh Jain, an executive with Cafepress.com, which until recently was selling Psycho Ex-Girlfriend T-shirts, also said there was “something strange” about the enterprise. “It doesn’t look like the content is real,” Jain said. “And it seems a bit strange to me that the woman didn’t know her voicemails were on the site but Good Morning America did.”
Analysts expect Facebook’s adjusted earnings to rise 30 percent to 13 percent per share, excluding charges related to stock based compensation. Revenue, meanwhile, is expected to grow 36 percent to $1.44 billion. But the number everyone has foremost in mind is percentage of revenue from mobile; analysts from Stern Agee and Goldman Sachs have estimated mobile will comprise close to 30 percent of Facebook’s sales, up from 25 percent last quarter and 14 percent the quarter before that.
At the time, I asked Peter Thiel what made Hoffman tick. “Once years ago, the question came up about the meaning of life,” Thiel told me then. “He said he thought it had something to do with the relationships you build along the way.”
Heavy-duty photo-editing Mac users may not be happy this morning. Apple told news website The Loop that it has decided to abandon Aperture, its professional photo-editing software application.
“TuneIn anchors a human at the other end of the broadcast,” says CEO John Donham. That’s true, at least in some sense, of each of its offerings. The question, though, is if that’s enough.
Peretti defends the borrowing, in some cases. Often, he said, the sponsored posts, which in Virgin’s case are produced jointly by Buzzfeed and Virgin, have a fair-use right to use the pictures.
German television replayed the images of the rich young troublemaker talking smack from a luxury suite in Thailand, acting like he was beyond the reach of German laws. A German prosecutor set out to prove him wrong and asked for Kim’s arrest; the German embassy in Bangkok revoked his passport. Now Kim was in Thailand as an illegal alien. Thai police cuffed him in his suite and led him to an immigration prison. “This wasn’t a normal jail,” Kim says. “This was fucking crazy. I’m wearing a custom suit. I’m thrown into a place, 18 guys sleeping on a concrete floor, everyone in sweaty shirts, it’s 40 degrees Celsius and smells like shit. I’ve got mosquitoes eating me, the food comes in a bucket.”
Evans says he was aware of the potential security risks, but in a call with WIRED last week, he dismissed many of these oft-cited vulnerabilities as “far-fetched” and said that as a private political party, the Utah GOP isn’t held to the same security standards as the government.
But Minimalist still seems to work. If you’re neurotic about your Gmail account – as we are – and want to delete the extra stuff, Minimalist is a wonderful add-on.
In a similar case in 1991, the U.S. Secret Service seized three computers belonging to a company called Steve Jackson Games. The company, in addition to producing fantasy books and games, hosted an online bulletin board for gamers to communicate with one another. An employee of the company was under suspicion for activities conducted outside work, but the Secret Service confiscated his employer’s computers as well. The Secret Service accessed, read and deleted 162 e-mail messages that were stored on the computers used for the bulletin board.
I thanked the owner for her time, took the card and brochure she offered and made my way to the door. Just before we escaped she blocked the exit, impeding our escape.
Some of the other side effects reported included loss of appetite and depression. Only 30 percent of the volunteers said they felt no effect from having their mobile phones taken away.
As far as we can tell the bundle sharing aspect of the new Prism site is not yet live. There is an older page in the Prism wiki that lists a few bundles developers have put together using older versions of Prism, but the page cautions against using them with Prism 1.0.
>’We can figure out which phone disappeared at the time of the detonation. We can find the triggerman.’
But mostly, I think terrorist attacks are much harder than most of us think. It’s harder to find willing recruits than we think. It’s harder to coordinate plans. It’s harder to execute those plans. It’s easy to make mistakes. Terrorism has always been rare, and for all we’ve heard about 9/11 changing the world, it’s still rare.
But if we can teach machines these more amorphous tasks—teach AI agents to do anything on a computer—Sutskever believes we can teach them to do just about anything else. After all, an AI that can’t browse the internet unless it understands the natural way we humans talk. It can’t play Grand Theft Auto without the motor skills of a human. And like so many others, Quiter argues that navigating virtual worlds isn’t so different from navigating the real world. If Universe reaches is goal, then general intelligence isn’t that far away. It’s a ridiculous aim—but it may not be ridiculous for long.
Additional Forward offices are planned in other major U.S. cities, although Aoun won’t say where they will be located or when they may open.
There’s an illustrated book called “Barbie: I Can be a Computer Engineer,” and everyone we know hated it.
The RealNames system already works on Microsoft’s dominant Internet Explorer browser, Phone.com’s mobile Internet browser and AvantGo’s software for use with handheld devices.
