Having sold a paltry 150,000 units, Apple put the Cube “on ice” in July 2001.
Buffett has long been averse to technology companies in general, as well as Apple specifically. Buffett is a big fan of stable companies with strong recurring cash flows and low valuations, but as a sector, tech is inherently very volatile as competitive landscapes shift rapidly.
Reports claim that Transport Security Administration agents are making travelers completely empty out all their electronic devices at airport security checkpoints.
Tech platforms host enormous amounts of content—YouTube alone sees 400 hours of content uploaded every minute—and more content translates to more revenue for these companies. “These platforms don’t exist for goodwill or the public interest, they are for profit,” says Roberts. For now, these moderators are still necessary, a human filter to watch, assess, and delete the worst of it so others don’t have to see it.
“What we have to do is to modify behavior so people will purchase this way, not take this way,” Hunter said. “They don’t pay because they’ve never had to. But now it’s time to make some order out of the chaos – and it’s a wonderful chaos.”
That proved helpful. I discovered later that night the initial announcement stated they were merely screening applicants, using unspecified criteria to decide whom the South Korean team would choose to donate skin cells. These will be used to create custom stem-cell lines using somatic cell nuclear transfer, also known as therapeutic cloning. So this was not, in fact, the beginning of an actual trial.
“Super low tech linked perfectly with super high tech: perhaps a small model for how it must go to survive the human impact in this century and beyond,” wrote Coffer.
The technology for the acoustic fingerprint comes from Relatable and extracts the unique audio characteristics of the track – like beats per minute and the amount of bass and treble, for example – and then the MusicBrainz Tagger marks each file with a unique identifier.
Last week, news and video reports circulated of a swindler who strolled into a Virginia Beach, Virginia, gas station and, with no special equipment, reprogrammed a mini ATM to act as if it had $5 bills in its dispensing tray instead of $20 bills.
When I look out the window – it’s just been that kind of winter – I try to look past the drifts of snow and see trees leafing into green, a bright chorus of birds in the branches, backyard cookouts, spring evenings with steamed shrimp and cold wine. One of harbingers of warm weather here in Madison is the arrival of trucks packed with seafood from Galveston, Texas. The fishermen hoist a banner proclaiming “Never Been Frozen” – which is, yes, slightly ironic here on the Midwestern tundra – and simply wait for customers to cue up.
The General Assembly’s Office of Legislative Audits estimated the state wasted at least $500,000 on the phones because of numerous flaws. At least 6,700 state employees had government-paid cell phones during fiscal year 2002, costing the state $5.3 million.
Sadly, the fun ended with the iPhone 2.0 software update. Books, our free e-book reader application of choice, required a jailbroken 1.4.x iPhone.
And you know that when Reed Hastings says something, he will never ever change his mind and do the opposite, no matter how much circumstances change.

Tip: Suck it up! Attempt to get on the earliest bus you can from your hotel to the race start area. We wanted to get on a nice early bus so our day didn’t have to be stressful. Typically, I’m the type who tries to get ready for her day in as little time as possible…but I’m glad we allotted extra time that morning. Besides, I was so excited about this – in a child-on-Christmas kind of way – I had no problem waking up!
Our land-lines went out. Our cell phone service was glitchy. Basically, aside from the radio, we had no way to contact anyone about anything or find out information about our situation. And, the first two days, we were blocked in by fallen trees. I’ve never felt so cut off. I didn’t even know where the local storm shelters might be. I finally was able to drive out onto the main road, still strewn with fallen tress and branches, and check at town hall. They indeed had a warming shelter and, whew, a charging station.
Generating a neural-network design from scratch is harder than tweaking the settings of one that already exists. But recent research results suggest it’s getting closer to becoming practical, says Mehryar Mohri, a professor at NYU.
There’s also a huge market that has been completely ignored. The top five technology enthusiast sites receive a combined 100 million page views per month, with AnandTech pulling in 42 million per month alone, a rate that would make almost any portal site owner jealous.
__JH: __Greg Means in Portland runs Tugboat Press and they publish this great anthology called Papercutter. He publishes it three or four times a year. It’s great, because he finds a lot of cartoonists that you might not have heard of. I feel like a lot of alternative comic anthologies are great, but they’re the usual suspects. It’s the same alternative people, so it’s not as exciting. Yeah, it’s great to see new stuff that they’ve done, but you’re not getting to discover anyone new.
A new drug being developed would eliminate menstruation altogether, while still allowing women to get pregnant. Another drug would eliminate both periods and pregnancy.
The act prohibits the Pentagon from “research, development, test or evaluation on any technology whose primary purpose is the collection of information on United States citizens … for intelligence or law enforcement purposes.”
I was traveling again yesterday, but Helen Branswell and my former CIDRAP colleague Robert Roos both got up stories examining this report yesterday evening. They both raise an issue will need further examination: whether some part of this apparent cluster of cases can be traced to hospital procedure. That is important because, if transmission happened not in the outside world but within the hospital – as happened in SARS** – then the perception of how much risk is posed by this new virus could be recalibrated.
