Doherty and the EFF launched their own resistance campaign last week after a news site, the Independent Media Center, and its Internet provider, the Online Policy Group, received a cease-and-desist letter from Diebold. In addition to his position at EFF, Doherty is executive director of the Online Policy Group, a nonprofit organization that focuses on digital privacy and rights issues.

Riabinina’s story is among several that Italian photographer Giuseppe Nucci documents in -196: The Pioneers of Resurrection. His ethereal, atmospheric images respectfully capture the quest for immortality in Russia, home to a visionary gaggle of cosmists, cryonicists, and transhumanists who believe in a deathless future. They preach resurrection, wear high-tech cyber-suits, and deep-freeze the corpses of loved ones they hope to meet again.
Linford figures that in the attack he’s been tracking, the spammers have hit Hotmail’s server more than 52 million times. Even assuming a pitifully low 1 percent rate of live addresses gleaned from those hits, it still amounts to a significant number of e-mail addresses being added to spam lists.
I plugged in an iPhone and a point-and-shoot camera, and both were recognized immediately by Picasa. I also appreciated the fact that Picasa lets you organize and store your photos however you want on your hard drive. It seeks out photos on your local machine and loads them into the app while preserving whatever file structure you’ve built. This is especially useful for iPhoto users who currently rely on the file system enforced by Apple’s program. It’s also great for stubborn geeks like myself who don’t like our applications telling us what to do and where to put our files.
The fate of the cyber police proposed by Kazakhstan’s President is even more disastrous. Valikhan Tuleshov, a deputy director of the Kazakhstan Institute of World Politics and Economy told us that the initiative was supported by China but Russia was more hesitant along with other members of the SCO. Finally the idea was dropped.
The 400 About.com guides receive 30 percent of ad revenues, allocated according to how popular their sites become. About.com is the fifth most popular website in the United States, ranking just above Google and Amazon, according to Media Metrix. It attracted more than 36 million unique visitors in April 2002.
They did not reverse the anonymity of the entire Netflix dataset. What they did was reverse the anonymity of the Netflix dataset for those sampled users who also entered some movie rankings, under their own names, in the IMDb. (While IMDb’s records are public, crawling the site to get them is against the IMDb’s terms of service, so the researchers used a representative few to prove their algorithm.)
“It’s a forum where people can express themselves to any degree, so we want to see what it is that they’re going to express,” Gibson says.
In the public beta, which was released this week, you can drag and drop files from the Mac desktop to a virtual machine. When the final release ships, Pat tells us that you’ll be able to drag and drop between virtual machines, too.
Fractal is a little hard to explain, but it’s a puzzle/arcade game from Cipher Prime, who specialize in games that are beautiful both visually and aurally. In Fractal, you have an area of hexagons, randomly filled with little colored hexagons called “fractals.” Whenever you tap an empty space or a space on the perimeter, everything is shoved outwards one space from where you tap, with new fractals appearing. When you get a “bloom,” a flower-shaped patch of seven fractals in one color, then it disappears, scoring you points. The blooms explode outward, which means you can set up chain reactions for lots of points.
Today, he says, things don’t always work this way. Disparate AI systems are often developed independently, and don’t use standard data formats. (Though this too is starting to change thanks to deep learning, a form of artificial intelligence that seeks to mimic how the brain works. Part of the great promise of deep learning, experts say, is the emergence of a common language and formulas for speech, vision and natural language processing.)
The right-hand side of the page features the opening bars of each work. Users of the site can click on each of Mozart’s compositions and listen to the opening bars performed by the Royal College of Music.
Other enterprising souls have started selling parody wear – mostly T-shirts with the graphics from Ready.gov accompanied by unofficial captions.
Prior to the purchase Google said it could not say what privacy policies will govern the new online behavioral database made possible by its acquisitions, citing SEC rules. But they did say it would improve the privacy practices around what are known as ‘third party cookies,’ that is, cookies served up by a website that are not attached to that particular domain (such as the Google Analytics cookie served up on THREAT LEVEL).
“Records were stolen, computers were smashed, and a big data node in Nablus was destroyed, and the school records of 2 million school children were lost,” said Nigel Parry, co-founder of the Electronic Intifada website.
“JustSayBlow.com will be temporarily suspending its campaign in light of today’s tragic events,” Hlinko said. “There will be time for politics later. Please take whatever activist energy and donations you would’ve used for JustSayBlow, and instead shift them towards helping the victims.”
Data-analysis firm Coremetrics was forced to explain itself Tuesday after an Internet security firm noticed that personal information submitted to various Web shopping sites was being forwarded to the company’s servers.
But now they’re going even further. Groups like DataRefuge and the Environmental Data and Governance Initiative, which organized the Berkeley hackathon to collect data from NASA’s earth sciences programs and the Department of Energy, are doing more than archiving. Diehard coders are building robust systems to monitor ongoing changes to government websites. And they’re keeping track of what’s been removed—to learn exactly when the pruning began.
The deal covers all the libraries in UC’s 10-campus system, marking the biggest expansion of Google’s effort to convert millions of library books into digital form since a group of authors and publishers sued last fall to derail a project launched 20 months ago.
“‘More than 65,000 colors’ produces higher quality, more accurate screen display than the screen display of defendant’s m130,” attorneys from the law firm of Sheller Ludwig & Badey in Philadelphia said in the suit. “The difference in quality and accuracy of the screen display is reflected in higher retail prices for handhelds that in fact support more than 65,000 colors.”
But the technology – at least so far – has intimidated non-geeks. Users must buy special hardware to make phone calls over the internet, and the best deals are typically between two callers who use the same service.
Just this week, a new online community, Figment.com, officially launched. The site was created by two former employees of *The New Yorker *magazine and is designed as a place where writers aged 13 and up can share their writing, “follow” other young authors who they enjoy and even review work or be reviewed themselves. Community members can choose to make their stories public, available to select people or visible only to themselves. They can get to know each other better through an online forum where advice, writing prompts and strategies are all proffered…
Instead of just redesigning the existing app with more bells and whistles, EastBanc “instead built one that was Cloud-backed with real-time data and analytics…a Cloud-based Internet-of-Things platform that could take real-time data and mash it with static data like stops and routes, and then add driver data and traffic and weather data … all in the interest of presenting the realworld as accurately as possible.”
More than 4 million children in California come from low-income families – the equivalent of one out of every six poor children in the United States – according to the National Center for Children in Poverty.
Hackers try to build the best services over the long term by quickly releasing and learning from smaller iterations rather than trying to get everything right all at once. To support this, we have built a testing framework that at any given time can try out thousands of versions of Facebook. We have the words “Done is better than perfect” painted on our walls to remind ourselves to always keep shipping.
If a customer has a rented DVD, “they should press play” and not the record button, DiBoise told Patel in a San Francisco courtroom. RealNetworks’ website basically says the same thing.
“In the end, all politics are local,” said Ross Mayfield, chief executive of Socialtext, a company that makes collaboration software. “People don’t realize how much they have in common with their neighbors on political issues. Anything that can bridge those issues – so they can bubble to the top – is powerful.”
“SCO’s actions are again indeed curious,” SuSE said in its statement, released on Thursday. “We have asked SCO for clarification of their public statements, SCO has declined,” SuSE’s statement read.
What makes Ledonne think that a video game is the best way to try and deconstruct the tortured minds that led to Columbine? Gaming is essentially escapist entertainment and while there are plenty of violent games out there to help you get off, if that’s what gets you off, no one has ever confused a Sony console with a social laboratory.
Smith is highly critical of the face-scanning technology being proposed for use in airports and other public places. He believes the systems are not effective, but thinks airlines are being wooed by businesses that are offering them free trials of the expensive technology.

If the religious aspect of Christmas isn’t that important to you, or if you’d just like to be inclusive of other belief systems, why not include an image of His Noodliness on your tree?
I always found it amusing as a child that one enormous expanse of water could go by so many names. As a child I had no trouble with the legitimacy of the boundary lines and countries of Europe, but for some reason the ocean just tickled me. Perhaps because I could imagine a wall on land, I had seen Hadrian’s wall and would witness the fall of the Berlin wall, but in the ocean my imagination would run wild with fish-like border guards, and seahorse patrols. The ocean intrigued me then and intrigues me now. I love to swim in it, I dream of diving deeper into it, I long to swim with sharks.
At the same time, the foundation will choose six to eight high-profile targets each year, meticulously outline their claims, and then call them out one-by-one.
Neath’s article covers how to design URLs with that in mind, as well as numerous other suggestions. Neath knows his stuff too, you’d be hard pressed to find a site with better URLs than GitHub.
The challenge for Nocturnal Vision is that the algorithm sucks up processing power. Most smartphones today, including those featuring the 1-GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, don’t have enough muscle to run the software.
Darrin is one amongst a handful of
‘Distinguished Engineers’ from Microsoft who received the title directly from chairman Bill Gates. Darrin also cowrote
“Warfare Incorporated”, which was named ‘Best Game’ by Palm Computing. Mike and Darrin worked as systems developers together at Microsoft before their love of games and passion for building great user experiences led them to break away and start their own software companies.
