There is in fact little data to support the notion that meditation is good for Google’s bottom line, just a few studies from outfits like the Conference Board showing that emotionally connected employees tend to remain at their current workplaces. Still, the company already tends to its employees’ physical needs with onsite gyms, subsidized massages, and free organic meals to keep them productive. Why not help them search for meaning and emotional connection as well?
No one is saying we should decriminalize computer intrusion. But we must bring the CFAA in line with our country’s values of proportional sentencing and due process of law if we hope to instill a sense of legitimacy and faith in justice among digital natives. Otherwise, we will continue to radicalize and alienate the next generation of innovators – while failing to deter crime.
“Tags break down the top-down structure of websites,” Veen said. “Tags redefine how we use content on a site, and when you build a site and let users tag their own content or other people’s content, you have no idea how they are going to apply those tags. The architecture is built by them, not by you.”
But even that underestimates the total poisonous picture of American life today. To quote further from the CDC analysis which was based on a detailed study from the year 2009:
“If you’re really serious about learning the history of games,” he told me, “you need to play through a game to the end. One game I heard a lot about was Oddworld, but I was only able to play the first level for ten minutes before I had to move on.”
The speed and smallish size of the drones aren’t the only barriers to having crowds watch each race. The way the Drone Racing League sees it, the race courses will be so complex, with chunks of them hidden from view, that a crowd seeing an entire race would be difficult, if not impossible.
Many publishers would likely argue that it’s lost that audience because of ad blockers themselves. But concern over ad-blocking has also spurred soul-searching in the industry, as well as aspirations to innovation, such as WIRED’s own ad-free subscription service, which launched last month. The trade group IAB released a report last year on how advertisers should change their digital ads to be cleaner and less intrusive.
The government had asked the 2nd Circuit to take the rare move of letting all its judges hear the case after a three-judge panel last July said prosecutors cannot force corporations to release customers’ emails and other data stored on servers overseas.
Some think letter writing is a lost art. One woman is trying to change that.
So the Toosheh project last year began renting the use of a satellite run by Yahsat, a company based in the United Arab Emirates, to send its stream of encoded files. The collection, converted into a kind of MPEG known as a transport stream or “.ts” file, is sent in a repeating one-hour loop so that downloaders can start recording at any point in the day to receive it. And Yahsat’s satellite hovers over the Middle East, making it harder for the Iranian government to jam the satellite’s signal as it’s broadcast directly down to Iranian dishes. “It breaks the propaganda, all the information Iranians receive from hardliner media and state TV,” says Amir Rashidi, a researcher for the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran. “It’s a huge step to change the society, to ask the government for more freedom.”
The coolest thing, though, is the real-time aspect. You’ve got sand timers which limit your actions, and one main timer which indicates how often the ship takes damage. The scenario we played at PAX was fairly simple, just 10 minutes long at most, but there are a number of other scenarios which will be included.
I won’t reproduce the list here, but you can see it in my comment on that thread (in case it gets deleted, I’ve reproduced the list here). It includes nearly 70 peer-reviewed papers, five textbooks, and several websites. At first, Anaconda appreciated this list … later he dismissed it as a “laundry list” and was upset that he didn’t have access, which I’ll discuss more below.
Stephenson’s comments came as the telecom giant reported second-quarter profit of $3.92 billion. The Dallas-based company said it had profit of 63 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, were 79 cents per share.
“We’re interested in going into technical expertise… computer-related training. Things like [Adobe] Photoshop and [Microsoft Excel],” Cohn said. “We’re trying to get smart on different markets.”
The demo was dumb, but not just that. It suggested a certain obliviousness on Apple’s part about the ways this thing could go very wrong. The nightmare scenario for the watch (for us, not for Apple) is that it simply becomes another distraction machine, an even more irresistible place for dipping into the content streams that already flood our lives. We have no indication of Apple’s outlook on this possibility. Here’s a genuine question: If in six months we’re all constantly fiddling with our Apple Watches, would that make the product a success or a failure in Apple’s eyes?
At this stage, Kundra and his team have thrown the data up, and hoped that America will work out the kinks. “This is version 1.0, we’ve launched it in beta and we’re going to continue to innovate and ad more and more features.” One feature that he emphasized was a feedback loop, so that the site won’t just be about exposure, but also creating a dialogue.
