A long, long time ago, in the Dragon*Con galaxy not so far away, there were just a few Dragon*Con events broadcast on the hotel channels. Then there was a custom video for the 2002 Masquerade. Finally in 2003, Brian Richardson, Lucas Leverett, and Patrick Freeman got together to start making more video content, and DCTV was born.
Brian Selzer, co-founder of Ogmento, a company that creates augmented reality products for games and marketing, recognizes the need for augmented reality to go mobile. He said his company is working on several projects coming in the near future to help market mainstream movies with augmented reality smartphone apps. For example, movie posters will trigger interactive experiences on an iPhone, such as a trailer or even a virtual treasure hunt to promote the film.
“I know that if a manufacturer of a vehicle puts a car on the roadway it’s going to have gone through a thousand different tests before it ever gets out on the road,” Mr. Lamberth said. He added there is nothing preventing a tech company from partnering with an auto maker.
Facebook has explored facial-recognition cameras for brick-and-mortar stores that scan the crowd and relay emotion to clerks—potentially also matching your face with your Facebook profile. If you’re trustworthy enough, the system could automatically unlock a secure display case.
Amazon will reportedly analyze your voice to recognize your mood and develop Alexa’s conversational skills. It could recognize frustration, not just from the words you use but from your tone of voice.
Sonos, the speaker company, filed a patent for technology that could customize playlists based on the emotion in your voice or biometric data obtained from a wearable device, like perspiration or heart rate, all cross-referenced with your listening history.
Sony will be shutting down music sales in its online Connect Music store, which sold ATRAC-encoded files only playable on Sony devices. Sony will, however, continue to sell eBooks through the outlet. The Connect music store will remain open for North American and European customers at least through March 2008.
Robbins disagrees. He believes if sexuality was embraced in American culture, and given more positive associations, the society as a whole would be healthier. He believes art can help bring about that change.
Our second big talking point was to reinforce the need for a secondary domestic means of transferring cargo and eventually crew to the International Space Station.
On Thursday, an official from the office of Illinois State Attorney General Jim Ryan said that the Illinois Board of Elections has requested that the state intervene in the Vote-auction lawsuit.
I’m not sure I agree with the rationale, but after the 15 deaths due to a pyroclastic flow from Sinabung, the Indonesian government has raised the alert status at 19 active volcanoes across the country (UPDATE:* It looks like most of these volcanoes were on yellow status before this news article in the* Jakarta Post if you check some of the information on the PVMBG website. This appears to be a classic case of the newspaper misinterpreting the fact that these volcanoes have been on alert for some time). I assume this is meant to remind its citizens that these volcanoes present a real danger and heightened alert status allow them to enforce the exclusion zones around these volcanoes. Many of the volcanoes put on elevated alert are those that have been rumbling for some time, like Bromo, Dukono and Anak Krakatau – but now they are officially in the yellow (alert) status. Only three volcanoes are in orange (high alert) status: Rokatenda (Paluweh), Karangetang and Lokon, with Sinabing at red (danger) status. This change in status doesn’t come with new evacuation orders. The PVMBG recently raised the alert status at Kelut and following the events at Sinabung, it appears that this change may have caused some panic with local residents – again, a danger when trying to convey what the real danger is when a volcano becomes restless. CNN posted some video of villages just outside the exclusion zone at Sinabung and they really bring home the level of destruction caused by that eruption.
The painting is then rescanned into the computer. Greenfield-Sanders chooses the area she is interested in, enlarges it and prints it out as a giant mosaic of tiles.
Zombies is a tile-based game that currently offers up 10 additional expansion packs for added tiles, even more devious Event cards, and alternative scenario rules that guarantee you’ll never get bored. The company has an outstanding website that not only offers up additional rules and scenarios submitted by fans of the game, but they also offer up free PDFs of the various rules from the original game as well as the expansions. You’ll find bags of zombies, bags of zombie babies, and bags of zombie dogs for purchase. Plan on dedicating an entire living room if you wish to simulate the end of the world with three or more expansion packs. (Or is it an entire un-living room?) One or two expansions will only take up a large dining table. Get it? Dining table? I’ll stop.
Continental Airlines, for example, one of the largest airlines in the United States, uses Woolley’s system throughout its Continental.com website. Woolley said the airline has not paid for the software. Worse, the copyright notices in the source code have been removed.
Welp, it was a week. On Tuesday, Wikileaks dumped a trove of 8,761 (purported) leaked CIA documents as part of a collection called “Vault 7.” The data details some of the CIA’s hacking arsenal, including information about malware, viruses, trojans, and undisclosed zero-day vulnerabilities that the agency allegedly uses to compromise devices like computers, smartphones, internet-connected TVs and network servers for spying.
My clients and I believe that when words don’t match the deeds,
believe the deeds. SoundExchange has given them enough words, and fewenough deeds, to make the choice an easy one. It isn’t inSoundExchange’s favor, Mr. Simson.
The company boasts success with its Porta-series games, which in spite of a fee, have been downloaded 250,000 times in the last four months. “In an election year, we look at Google searches for party leaders by the electoral boundaries,” Rogers says. “When I looked at the results, I thought This probably doesn’t mean anything because what it showed was that David Cameron was going to win quite substantially. But the polls were very close, so there was a disconnect. But actually, it was closer to the final result than the polls were.”
Mind you, mastering “crap detection 101,” as digital guru Howard Rheingold dubs it, isn’t easy. One prerequisite is that you already know a lot about the world. For instance, Harris found that students had difficulty distinguishing a left-wing parody of the World Trade Organization’s website from the real WTO site. Why? Because you need to understand why someone would want to parody it in the first place—knowledge the average eighth grader does not yet possess.
The money laundering statute defines a monetary instrument as “coin or currency of the United States or of any other country, travelers’ checks, personal checks, bank checks, and money orders, or … investment securities or negotiable instruments, in bearer form or otherwise in such form that title thereto passes upon delivery.”
But one’s business opportunity is often another’s crisis, depending on which comics retailers you ask. Now that DC has entered the age of e-comics, digicoms or whatever one wants to call them, some real-world storefronts stocked with pulp masterpieces are nervous that the digital evolution of the comics industry might pass them by.
[partner id=”wireduk”]Launched in March 2007, Nasa’s Kepler spacecraft has been searching for undiscovered exoplanets in the habitable zone of their parent stars using a wavelet-based algorithm called transit planet search, which detects the moment a planet passes in front of its star. While the algorithm will spot the vast majority of planet candidates, a small number will go unnoticed. Since 2010, Planethunters has been searching through the Kepler data NASA released into the public domain, allowing its 200,000-strong army of volunteers to seek out the telltale dip in the brightness of parent stars as planets pass in front of them.
Tindell said manufacturers want to replace the ubiquitous floppy drives that are used to load sewing patterns. “Customers can download and upload their own embroidery patterns from the machine,” Tindell said. “But the primary motive is to save money on the floppy drive.”
In mid-July, Long found herself unable to move her legs. “I was just lying on my bed all day and needed help to eat,” she says. Long ended up in a hospital in Guangzhou with more than 30 other Fangtai Huawei workers. Doctors found they’d been exposed to n-hexane, presumably in the “banana oil.” It’s an industrial solvent that causes neurological damage at just 50 parts per million. Workers using it are supposed to wear respirators and operate in a ventilated area. As treatment, Long endured daily injections—she says they “hurt more than anything else in the world.” We interviewed her in a hotel a few blocks from the hospital; officials there wouldn’t answer our questions or allow us to see her on the premises. Long still tries to stay cheerful. “When I cry,” she says, “I cry secretly.”
