Eric was pessimistic. “I think the iPad’s gonna be cracked in half,” he said. Billy thought it would be covered in grease.
“It shows that ICE is everywhere,” Gil says. “We ourselves were shocked even though we study this. A lot of America thinks this phenomenon is happening in this limited geographical space along the border. This map is telling a different story: The border is everywhere.”
First, the good news. Plummeting storage costs and the availability of special hardware have finally made it cheap and easy to shrug off the shackles of TiVo and build your own personal video recorder out of an old PC.
For Maker Faire, I tried to use the Scout for iPad as my purse, too. With the number of items I wanted to carry around, it was a bit snug. For me, I need a separate purse. But for the average person (and most men), the bags have enough extra pockets for other items that need carrying.

“Palm’s plan to create two independent leading companies – one focused on platform software and licensing, the other on hardware and software handheld solutions – takes another significant step forward with Nagel at the helm of the future platform software subsidiary,” said Palm (PALM) Chairman Eric Benhamou.
This was a “gift,” as far as Ekeland was concerned. Few cases ever get to a jury, with 97% of defendants pleading guilty; of those who don’t, federal prosecutors boast a 93% conviction rate. Ekeland shared weev’s aversion to plea bargains on principle. “You get some points for cooperating, which I think is bullshit because of the way the system is set up,” he says. “It’s like if you exercise your constitutional right to a trial, you’re penalized in the sentencing phase, which is fucked up.”
Ian Goldberg, Zero Knowledge’s chief scientist, said that anonymity should be viewed on a sliding scale, from complete anonymity to pseudonymity to complete disclosure.
Among the species Woese and his colleague George Fox studied were a mouse, yeast and duckweed. They also sequenced RNA from E. coli other bacterial species. When they lined up the species by kinship, they found two strange results. The mouse, the yeast and the duckweed were, relatively speaking, very closely related. They were more closely related than many species of bacteria were to one another. And the bacteria yielded other strange results. Four species of methane-producing bacteria were only distantly related to other bacteria. They were just as closely related to the mouse, the yeast and the duckweed.
“Defendants have already caused significant irreparable harm to Real by prevailing upon this court to institute a temporary halt to sales of RealDVD since the evening of Friday, October 3, 2008,” RealNetworks wrote Patel. “The grant of a further TRO or preliminary injunction now will devastate Real’s ability to ever launch RealDVD successfully or to capitalize on its lead over competitors.”
The sentiment was echoed on Westboro Baptist Church’s website, which included the line “God sent the shooter to Newton, CT.”
What was appealing about the group’s MySpace tunes was the open song structures, the purity of instrument sounds and the earnestness of the sound. Not to mention great hooks and melodies. Motel Motel’s music was also a bit genre-bending, though obviously it fell under the umbrella of rock (something I would later find the band struggles with often).
Time to get back into the Mana cycle, I guess: Square Enix is about to bring back the tortured series. Will this be one more failed attempt, or the one that finally hits?

Tegu is two years old now, and to celebrate they’re introducing a new “pocket pouch” set of their magnetic blocks called the Prism. It’s a little felt pouch with just six pieces: four triangular shapes and two parallelograms. They come in different colors and the pouch is just big enough to hold the blocks in this Tangram-like configuration, so they’re perfect for portable “thinkering.” (Just don’t throw it in the same bag as your credit cards, since I’m not sure how they’d react to the strong magnets in the blocks.)
“This is bound to be a heartening sign to other (publish-on-demand) authors, that their work can indeed get attention,” said GreatUnpublished.com editor Jeff Schwaner.
At last there was some very good news for Boomtrain. Nick and Chris had gotten a meeting at Google Ventures, the company’s quasi-autonomous investment arm. Traffic on the southbound 101 had no momentum, and they were so preoccupied they didn’t seem to notice the spreading flares of copper sunrise over the Oakland Hills across the bay. Nick had woken up at 4:30 in the morning to get down to the city from Petaluma so they could make the drive together. “We’re going to have to put our best foot forward,” Chris said. “That’s you,” Nick said. “You are our best foot.” He was giggly from so little sleep and such high stakes.
A few things that don’t work quite as well as I’d like: first, once a part has been placed and you’ve gone on to something else, it can be difficult to delete unwanted parts. Sometimes you can make it work, but it can be tricky (particularly if you’ve already piled some other things on top of it). There are limits to the sizes of the pieces, which I’m sure keeps the app simpler to use, but occasionally we wanted a hair type or something to be just a little bigger than it would allow. I’d also like the ability to take a feature and flip it over without reflecting it. For instance, if I wanted to make two mis-matched eyebrows, that would be difficult because you’re just given the left one for each style.
If you think you might live close enough to pick up a live CBS broadcast, you can purchase a digital indoor TV antenna. We’ve had good luck with flat window antennas. This $29 antenna is a solid pick and has good range. Just stick it right on your window, aimed in the general direction of the stations you’re hoping to reach, if at all possible, and go to ANT in your TV’s input list.
