User input is critical to the success of any project, be it a piece of desktop software, a web-based app or a simple brochure-ware website. And I’m not just talking about usability testing, e-mail forms or demographic surveys, which most of us consider a necessary evil. The truth is that your project, and your creative skills, can gain significantly from involving the user in the process of building and improving your app.
Susan Fajt, who suffered a spinal-cord injury in a car accident in November 2001 that left her with little sensation from her chest down, e-mailed Weldon, who is also a physician, on Wednesday detailing her complaints and requesting an apology.
“We won’t have video accessibility at all locations, but we’ll be able to upload close to breaking news live. If we’re with the sheriff as they’re dealing with a situation, we can uplink and stream what’s happening,” Merrill said.

The site itself is slick and easy to navigate. It divides vendors by neighborhood, and then by delivery or pick-up availability. Businesses appear in a grid format, with a photo, name, and description. Once you click on a business, you’ll see whether you can choose to make a standing (weekly) order, or a one-time order. Photos of the food consume a majority of the page, and ordering is as simple as selecting an amount from a drop-down menu and going through a secure checkout process. And if you opt for pick-up, you can choose to get a text reminder to fetch your homemade granola or grass-fed beef.
The accompanying website also has some additional instructions to turn your creation into an Elf hat, plus it includes some indoor games using the hats you’ve made. (They also make some very simple but expertly done math apps for kids.) Grab the Santa Hat Sewing app before Christmas so your family has appropriate protective headgear. It’s free in the iTunes store!
Google fared better with this deal than it did with its proposed settlement of a civil copyright suit with authors over its book scanning project called Google Books. In that case, the Justice Department opposed the settlement, and the federal judge in the case turned down a revised agreement on the grounds that it gave Google too many rights and could lead to a search monopoly.
Kaplan was struck by the Dutch agreement language and differences in valuations in royalties versus a buyout, but talks with Fox and Warner Bros. amounted to the same thing. “Everyone thought I was on to something,” Kaplan says, “but they all said, ‘We had our lawyers look at this for years, there’s precedent now, and we’re not putting any more energy into it.’ So what I needed was to find someone to come up with the money to buy out the Doziers and then execute the buy/sell agreement with Fox.”

I’m on three fantastic panels next weekend at ScienceOnline2011 alongside some of my favorite bloggers and authors! I’d like to address each topic initially at the “unconference” and later in more detail here on the blog. First, I’ll introduce the key ideas below and invite readers to share any thoughts, questions, or points you’d like to see addressed as the discussion grows in comments (please specify which panel if you do). Chris is coming too and sessions will be webcast. I’ll post the details about that when I have them.

Time travel figures prominently in the story lines, along with plenty of mystery, adventure, intrigue, and history, all surrounding the sea and its environs.
“It’s arguably the most influential game in history. Arguably,” the producers wrote in the synopsis of their project. “At least that’s what we’re trying to show.” The film will be an “analytical exploration of its history, appeal and effect,” told via interviews with people “who lived this story.”
