Budding musicians who want to make an impression online don’t need to download fancy software, set up a website or scour MySpace for potential friends. In fact, they often don’t even need to know how to play a single note.
On Tuesday, Microsoft’s president, Brad Smith, said in a blog post that Congress should “move quickly with new legislation to protect these 800,000 Dreamers,” using a popular term for the young immigrants. Notably, Smith explicitly urged that immigration legislation take precedence over tax reform, another big legislative priority for corporate America.

The BBC is reporting that a group of researchers from the Imperial and University Colleges London have found geographic features on Mars which look like drainage channels from large lake beds. The team utilized data fro the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter for their study.
RU: The battle of Seattle showed the potential for unusual alliances. I see a broader anti-authoritarian alliance that brings libertarian conservatives, civil-libertarian liberals, harassed minorities, and even centrists who are concerned with privacy together with those worried about excesses in corporate control, which we need to understand as another example of authoritarian power.
Clovis Oncology soared 47 percent to $87.90 after the biotechnology company’s ovarian cancer drug was set for a label expansion.
SANTIAGO ATITLAN, Guatemala – Chonita Sojuel has seen the ads: A woman with a Palm Pilot trades stocks from atop the Himalayas, and twentysomethings in a San Francisco park use ultra-light laptops to meet with businessmen in an office in Lapland.
This year, in a kind of tacit admission that Amazon had gotten it right, both Google and Microsoft unveiled services that look a lot more like EC2.
SanDisk’s latest product hasn’t met with many positive comments. The idea has been criticized by bloggers for the restrictions the cards impose on consumers. The slotMusic cards are tied to a player, and listeners cannot choose the order in which the songs will be played.
During competitions between leagues of users, potentially hundreds or thousands of people would be watching a sparring match, adding the potential psychological effects of succeeding or failing in front of a large group of people. As any online gamer involved in a league knows, the feelings of defeat and victory that come across wires can be very real.
I’ve been working on something really exciting, and it’s finally ready to show you. It’s a video brought out in collaboration with TED-Ed. In it, I explain how the world of a sperm is so fundamentally different from the world of sperm whale. I describe a big idea from fluid mechanics called the Reynolds number, and explain why size matters a LOT for a swimmer.
TIRED Only the Android version includes material from the website. Only the iOS version has search function.
So, yeah: My brand-new CD, the one I wanted to use to hammer home all my points about the small joys of physical media, is DOA. Then again, they always seemed to break, or crack, or get smudged beyond comprehension—it’s one of the reasons why, a few years ago, we were all so eager to get rid of them, and so surprised when we found out some people would still buy them, so long as they still didn’t skip.

Yahoo also is recommending that all users change their passwords if they haven’t done so since 2014. If the same password is used to access other sites, it should be changed too, as should any security questions similar to those used on Yahoo.
But with the current moratorium expiring in October, the Arizona Republican has quietly shifted his stand. He no longer talks about banning all Internet taxes, and he has not reintroduced his bill from the last Congress, Senate Bill 1611, which would have extended the existing moratorium.
Nor does the transfer give countries like China or Russia control over IANA—let alone the entire Internet. Both countries are part of an existing ICANN committee called the Governmental Advisory Committee, or GAC. The GAC advises ICANN and can force ICANN’s board to vote on proposals, but forcing a vote requires a consensus from the GAC, so no one country push policies without support of the rest of the member states. The board can still vote down the GAC’s proposals. And because ICANN is based in California, it still has to follow US law, as do US companies like Verisign that handle domain name registration under contract of ICANN.
But the dearth of knowledge is immense. In the microbial area, three out of five kingdoms “are basically unknown,” Brand said.
More troubling, some security experts insist that AutoUpdate is flawed and sometimes indicates that patches have been applied when they actually have not.
So we really worked on partnerships for this version and that meant on partners such as Top Gear to bring humor into the game. We worked with partners from Pixar on our new lighting engine. We worked on partners from Warner Brothers on doing the audio mix in a better way, and we worked with partners from Pirelli on the tires. But also, we’ve had individuals who have come in. We’ve had Bob Bondurant in our studio, who is a famous race car driver, kind of one of my heroes. But he’s also a driving school instructor, and he’s one of those guys who just from having been a driving school teacher for so long, like any good teacher, he can change his communication style to break through.
In an unexpected case, surveillance drones are being used to protect worker’s rights. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers union local in Philadelphia is using three camera-equipped drones to document rule violations at construction sites, and to fly over protests in order to prove that union members aren’t violating rules.
We’re checking with McPharlin to find out where these can be purchased, if anywhere, and will post an update when we hear back. Either way, they’re pretty sweet eye candy.
“The government has not shown and cannot show that the site ever was used to commit a criminal act, much less that it will be in the future. By hosting discussion forums and linking to existing material on the internet, Puerto 80 is not committing copyright infringement, let alone criminal copyright infringement,” (.pdf) according to the site’s legal filing, first reported by TechDirt.
YouTube delivers more than 6 billion hours’ worth of content every month to viewers worldwide and is working to promote its talent pool even more. A host of other players—from IAC’s Vimeo to former Hulu CEO Jason Kilar’s Vessel—are gearing up to launch subscription video services. Add in all the hours users are spending on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Instant Video, and that’s a lot of online time not spent on Facebook. The more Facebook can make itself a native video platform, the more of those hours it can get for itself.
iPad Peek has a few limitations. There’s no touch scrolling, ads produce pop-ups, and embedded Flash videos and objects will still render inside the emulator even though the real iPad doesn’t do Flash. So, it’s basically a Webkit wrapper set to a fixed width and height. But, it does give you a pretty close approximation of how your site will look on the new shiny.
Johnson County’s history is one of westward-bound pioneers settling on the rolling plains in the early 1800s. “Indians” weren’t newcomers then, but the word the settlers used for the native people was adopted for the local high school’s mascot. Now the land where the Oregon Trail branched is colonized by Target and Bass Pro Shops. The county is 87 percent white and has a median household income of $76,000, the highest in the state. Here, Kansas’ red political leanings fade to pink—48 percent of the county voted for Trump in 2016, a considerable decline for the Republican candidate from prior elections. Johnson County voters “like the Bob Doles and Mitt Romneys,” says Patrick Miller, a professor of political science at the University of Kansas. “They don’t have as great a love for where the Republican party is going.”
The problem, perhaps, is that while the idea of making a workplace comedy in a science fiction world is potentially a good one, it’s not one that’s inherently funny. There are too many examples of tired jokes appearing with the sense that, hey, they’re asking the Stormtrooper-stand-ins where the conference room is! excuses the fact that you’ve seen these scenes before. Similarly, the “hyper-efficient organization is actually filled with incompetents who just happen to fall upwards” idea is so old that adding “but they’re in space!” isn’t enough of an excuse to re-use it so blatantly. Dark Minions could be good, but in order for that to happen, it has to stop being so lazy.

The game comes with 125 levels, and they unlock in batches — the fewer moves you take on a level, the more coins you get; get enough coins and it unlocks another batch of 25 levels. If you like sliding-tile puzzles, check out Snake Slider — it’ll have you in knots.

“I’m a voracious reader and I built the software because I couldn’t stand the Web without it,” said Brent Simmons, who says the number of downloads of his Macintosh-based aggregator, NetNewsWire, is now in five figures. “The demand for aggregators is just going to tip over at some point and go wild.”
Courier opportunities have been available for years – people can sign on with some services and get reduced airfare for delivering packages. Jacobs’ site is different, he said, as it simply connects senders with deliverers. It also hopes to give the average person access to the speed and reliability of hand delivery, at a fraction of costs that Jacobs said can exceed $2,000.
Also on Varney, the Texas Attorney General who is suing the Obama administration to prevent it from giving up control of ICANN! Don’t miss what he has to say.
Like any other addiction gone dry, not racing occasionally hurts. But at night, in bed, when I can’t sleep, I think of the slow ones. The groaners. The binary throttles, the 30-mph slides, the joy of the struggle. Because the other secret of racing a slow car is that the car somehow manages to disappear. It’s just you, a handful of other people, and the joy of a good fight.
