Trent Reznor has been telling the whole world how happy he is to be free from his record label. Now the Nine Inch Nails mastermind has unveiled a post-label strategy that takes Radiohead’s In Rainbows concept further by leveraging BitTorrent and releasing songs under a Creative Commons license that permits purchasers to remix the tracks.
In reality, there were a few hiccups along the way that made my purchase less seamless. Two pairs of jeans I’d shoved back down the “outbox” chute didn’t disappear from my list, which meant I would have been charged for them when I went to pay. I had to tell someone, who went into the back and managed to get them off the list. Then the terminal wanted to charge me more than the sale price listed on the tag.
When I interviewed Emma Clarke, the voice of the Underground, for my post yesterday, I didn’t realize quite how historical the conversation would be. The freelance voiceover artist and comedy writer was apparently fired Monday by the London Underground – not for her spoof announcements, but because a U.K. newspaper reported that she didn’t take the Tube because she didn’t like it.
GD: You have some pretty serious equipment and spend a lot of time observing. Does it bother you to be called an amateur?
Zombies rule Park City again. The Slamdance low-budget flick Trailer Park of Terror, directed by music video legend Steven Goldmann (Shania Twain, Bruce Springsteen, et al.), was adapted from a popular comic book series and features a trailer-trash zombie babe with, according to the website, “a killer body.” Boy, howdy! If that’s not undead enough, George Romero is bringing his new Diary of the Dead to Sundance, and Bruce LaBruce premieres Otto — a fable about gay, politically active, scenester zombies.
Turkey is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization alliance. If authorities there were behind the hack attack, it would mean that a NATO ally had attempted to spy on a U.S. citizen on U.S. soil, presumably without the knowledge or approval of U.S. authorities, and for reasons that don’t appear to be related to a criminal or counter-terrorism investigation.
Shares of Wal-Mart Stores (NYSE:WMT) and Cisco Systems (NASDAQ:CSCO) will give the Dow Jones Industrial Average’s a big boost Thursday, but not quite enough to halt the recent slide.
Then, in columns, he plotted various criteria—like whether the activity is inherently meaningful and not just a means to an end (“autotelic”), whether it “can be mastered,” whether it “impacts multiple areas of life.” For “programming” and “entrepreneurship,” Ho ticked off yes for every quality. When he came to the social realm of “spending time with friends and family,” he checked the box for “impacts multiple areas of life.” For “can be mastered,” he wrote maybe.
So, how well did Precious – the nickname I gave my Surface Pro – handle itself, as I threw everything I could possibly imagine at its CPU? Like a champ!
The service is available as of today to CloudFlare’s enterprise customers. They pay at least $5,000 a month to use the company’s CDN and online atttack-thwarting services. But Prince wants to eventually make it available to all CloudFlare customers.
Sound interesting? Well, Season 3 of the series just started this past weekend on Disney XD. Here’s how to catch up on everything that came before.
“There was a communications staffer who once said to me – in the summer of 2004 – I wouldn’t know a blog if it slapped me in the face,” Rabin-Havt recalled. “I don’t think that attitude exists anymore.”
“Personally, I think the idea is a genius one,” says Dr. Iltifat Husain, the founder and editor-in-chief of iMedicalApps, when asked about CoinMD, pointing out that such a service could tap into the expertise of countless residents in training – students hungry for some extra money. Husain, who is not involved with CoinMD, believes it could actually be useful for people with common medical conditions. But this comes with a caveat. “I would never recommend this site to a patient,” he says, “because it’s not done right.”
