If bot building sounds sketchy, that’s because the tool’s legal status is, to be generous, hazy. New York and California have laws that make bots designed to capture event tickets illegal, and the federal BOTS Act of 2016 made bot ticket scalping illegal. Beyond that, companies whose sites have been gamed by a bot could conceivably win if they sued the botmaker. But that only matters if a company does sue—and no sneaker or clothing company has. Instead, companies have been ramping up evasive maneuvers. Adidas created an app called Confirmed that only lets people reserve sneakers, which they can then buy at a brick-and-mortar store in certain cities.
The results seemed so over-the-top that even Dennis Charney, one of the study’s senior scientists and now dean of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai in New York City, didn’t quite believe them. Neither did anyone else, he thinks. No one replicated the research—until, in 2006, when Charney, by then at NIMH, teamed up with researcher Carlos Zarate and repeated it. Of 17 patients treated, 12 improved within a day compared to a placebo group, which saw no response. Five saw their depression completely disappear for the duration of the study.
The 11-incher has a less-powerful quad-core chip, but it’s lighter at 2.9 pounds (instead of the 3.5 pounds for the 13er) and much cheaper, starting at $530. Both will ship this winter — the 11-inch in late January and the 13-inch a few weeks later — and both will be available through Best Buy.
The idea of replenishing or replacing blood through transfusion caught on shortly after Harvey’s work became known. Physicians, notably Richard Lower, experimented widely using animals, devising instruments and studying ways to get around the problems of clotting. It was Lower who performed the first successful blood transfusion between dogs in 1665. Or partially successful: The donor dog bled to death.

My friends, Peter, Fran, Phillipa, I beg you, please don’t make Gandalf needy! Please do not wreck his nobility. You have already done so with two other of my favorite characters. I just ask you, don’t mess with Gandalf’s motivations. Don’t make him unsure of himself, and don’t let Galadriel be his guide or his girlfriend: partner, yes; girlfriend or guide, no. Just don’t do it! If you already have done it, you can still save it. You have a year. A quick one day re-shoot, and I bet it will be all better – OK, now I am begging, I will stop. But after the flaws in the LotR adaptations, I am concerned. Trust is easily broken and difficult to repair. Getting this right would go a long way – I hope you do.
A few years back, on a walk among the spice shops and bodegas of Manhattan’s Chinatown, I spied a storefront that looked like it was owned by a hard-drinking chemist. Fernet and Aperol commingled with beakers, pipettes, and books—stacks and stacks of books. I knocked on the door to ask what they did.
“Regardless of if they come up with good slogans, they are going to interact with the advertisements; it’s more resonant and creates more buzz,” said Hoffman.
A moderate earthquake is really just right. It reminds you about the fundamental hazard, freaks you (and your cat) out a bit, makes you think twice about the those bottles on the top shelf, and makes you think about your own general preparedness.
“We have a full-time officer whose job it is to make sure that data we have is used only and exclusively in the context of what the law in that jurisdiction requires,” he said. “There are very complex and important rules that restrict the use of the data, and we’re very scrupulous about that.”

I walked into the store and pulled out my sketchbook. I made a map of the store, including all the tables, and counted how many computers were at each table. Each store has something like 50 machines. More than half were in use. I went to the first open computer and typed in a short URL to download the app. I looked around to double check that there were no terms of service I was missing. If there were, and if it said anything about “installing applications”, I would have had to go back home and write an HTML5 or Flash version.
“We have an obligation to the bands,” said the SXSW organizer. “That’s definitely not something that we would want done, and we try to not do that by making them streaming-available on the site.” She added that her boss would get back to us with an official response about what action, if any, will be taken. As of today, Stolt said he has not heard from SXSW about the torrents, which are out in the wild at this point, so even if they ask him to close his site, they’ll be available on other torrent-tracker sites.

Five years ago, 25-year-old radical libertarian Cody Wilson stood on a remote central Texas gun range and pulled the trigger on the world’s first fully 3-D-printed gun. When, to his relief, his plastic invention fired a .380-caliber bullet into a berm of dirt without jamming or exploding in his hands, he drove back to Austin and uploaded the blueprints for the pistol to his website, Defcad.com.

GM: Definitely a big yes. There are seven Newbury & Hobbes short stories already, with more to come. I have plans to fill in a few of the gaps between novels, and also to tell the story of Templeton Black, Newbury’s first assistant who died a horrible death during a botched investigation at Fairview House. I’d like to pick up on some of those seeds I’ve sown in the novels, too, where I’ve left dangling threads. I also have plans for a sequence of linked stories featuring a new female nemesis for Newbury, the mysterious Lady Arkwell. She gets a brief mention in The Executioner’s Heart, but there’s a whole story to tell there and I’d like to do it episodically.

As Miggins points out, Sandy isn’t your average storm. “Sandy scrapped the entire eastern seaboard and wreaked billions of dollars in havoc across twelve states,” he says. “We’re just a blip on the map.” And as we published this story, Peer 1 and 75 Broad had not actually gone dark. Yes, DataGram was offline, but within hours of the storm, many of its customer had found ways of getting back up and running.
