What did the executives find in their genomes? Quake, whose genetic data was subjected to a pretty impressive array of clinically-focused analyses, discovered a potentially elevated risk of myocardial infarction, type 2 diabetes and obesity, as well as the presence of two potentially serious mutations in genes associated with sudden cardiac death that were made more concerning by his 19-year-old cousin’s death in 2008 from sudden cardiac failure. Flatley’s genome, in contrast, contained only minor surprises:
Amazon is up a whopping 138% over that period – not because it’s the biggest online retailer in the U.S., but because its Amazon Web Services cloud business dominates the market. Never mind that AWS accounts for just 7% of the company’s sales. It’s the cloud, stupid. The cloud drives profits.
It’s perfectly legal to record and sell cover songs of someone else’s material, so long as you pay the compulsory licensing fee of about 10 cents per song. The tech team built an algorithm that could ingest all that data and begin to understand what the menus were actually saying. Almost. Because then they had to define what “is” is. Which is to say, like, what are bagels, really? What if the menu doesn’t call the boiled-dough baked round-with-a-hole bread product served with cream cheese and lox a bagel? It’s still a bagel, right?

Juul plans to release more watches and chronographs in the coming years in partnership with a hand-picked list of designers. “We have no grand plans of revolutionizing the whole watch industry, we do however want to create a range of great watches that carry a recognizable expression,” says Juul. “We hope to be on the forefront of a new generation of Scandinavian watches with classic Danish design with just the right amount of cool Copenhagen urban style.”

He shows me photos of McAfee’s taxi driver, bodyguards and friends, some of whom, like Eddie Ancona, are still being held by police. He shows me pristine ocean views, fresh lobster cooked at home, and many of the girls that stayed on McAfee’s estate, noting that one of them, Amy Emshwiller, tried to kill McAfee at least twice. The young woman will be a central figure in the graphic novel, which opens with one of her attempts on McAfee’s life – the same incident detailed by Davis in John McAfee’s Last Stand:

We’re in the very early days of figuring out the possibilities of sponsored data. For one of our phone chats, Saluja called while on his way to Costa Rica, where brick-and-mortar banks are toying with the notion of eating data costs for users of their mobile apps. “It’s so much cheaper to pay for someone’s data than it is to pay for them walking into a branch,” says Saluja.

When the Justice Department sought an extensive list of anonymized search queries from the company, we only learned about it because Google fought the request in open court, out of reluctance to part with a trove of valuable data for free.
