Musk: At first I thought, jeez, maybe I’m just looking in the wrong place! Why was there no plan, no schedule? There was nothing. It seemed crazy.
In a 2010 article published on the NAS website, Emanuel described the event as “a scandal” — but he didn’t see it as a challenge to the scientific consensus on climate change. The National Association of Scholars, on the other hand, sought to extrapolate the Climategate incident “into a universal condemnation of the field,” Emanuel told me. “It was just patently disingenuous.”
Henry Gustav Molaison is one of the most famous patients in the annals of brain research. In 1953, an experimental surgery meant to relieve his severe epilepsy rendered him frozen in time: He could remember events and facts he knew before the surgery, but could retain virtually nothing after. For decades, Molaison (who’s known as H.M. in psychology textbooks and scores of research papers) cooperated with researchers interested in what his strange memory deficit could teach them about how the brain creates a record of faces, facts, and life experiences.
John presented his passport and his birth certificate, and his license was reinstated. But the officers wouldn’t give him any paperwork to prove that it was reinstated. He wanted a piece of paper to show his boss that he was okay to drive again. “It was kind of like a bad dream,” John said.
Some people have proposed that the first human missions to Mars land on Phobos to avoid the added complexity of landing on Mars and then launching again from the bottom of Mars’ gravity well. The gravity on Phobos is only 1/1000th the gravity of Earth.
“I’ve always just been interested in how stuff like that works,” says Jason Kottke, “and it seemed like a good opportunity to contribute a little bit to the research he was doing.”

There have been some hurdles. In September, Facebook disclosed that it overstated the average length of time users watched video ads on its site. The measurement didn’t affect how much Facebook charges to run video spots, but analysts say ad agencies may have used the Facebook estimates as a key metric when they plan campaigns and decide how much advertising to place on Facebook or competing sites.
Much of the impetus comes from the fact that newer machines generate more heat than their slower counterparts. Thus, they require more powerful (read: noisier) internal devices to cool them down. For sound-sensitive techies, that creates some annoying side effects.
I don’t write much about religion, although in college I minored in the history of Christianity. But I do know that most Americans have sex, most Americans believe in God or a higher power, and most Americans identify with some sort of religion. Of those, the majority are Christian.
98 percent are browsing the web on their iPhones. 94 percent using e-mail, 90 percent using text messaging, and 80 percent are using 10 or more features. “You can’t even begin to figure out how to use 10 features on a normal phone,”
I’m on the fence with the artwork: I think Adam Rebottaro’s comic book illustrations have been improving since the original game, but it’s still not up to the standards I’d expect from a great comic book. It works for putting you into the comic book setting and adds that flavor to the game, but it isn’t the Marvel Method. I’ve also spotted a few misspellings and punctuation errors on the cards — but I suppose that just adds to the comic book authenticity…
Fact: Despite popular perception, pop-up ads are among the best performing of all online ads. If I told you not to think about Bill O’Reilly’s underwear, your first thought would be to imagine O’Reilly’s boxers, briefs or I shudder to think what else (perhaps emblazoned with the Fox News “We report. You decide” slogan.) That’s how “pops” work. You are aware that you are ignoring them, so they cut through the clutter.
“People should realize that data rights are real rights, and we have a mechanism to enforce them,” Naik says.
Exactly what ill effects would result from the canal aren’t clear, partly because the plan itself is not clear. But here are a few scenarios.
Still, Bartel noted that Travelzoo’s stock-market fortunes have improved markedly since it secured a listing on the Nasdaq exchange in December. Since transferring from the lower-profile over-the-counter market, and posting higher profits, Bartel said he’s been getting more calls from mutual funds and other institutional investors.
This week, when schools are closed in my area for Winter Break, I’ll be presenting crafts programs at a couple of local libraries. But for all of you who are too far to come join us, I thought I’d share some recycled craft projects you can do at home.
Regland is also set to run registration using the servers of its network of registrars simultaneously, in the hopes of avoiding a system overload caused by too many customers filing requests.
That allegation, in turn, has kicked off an evolving, unsubstantiated controversy about whether the Obama White House tried to spy on the incoming Trump administration.
Books have been migrating to mobile devices for some time now, but traditionally, the pulp edition is imagined (and released) first. Carman’s thinking, however, is that “books have so much to compete with, that trying to stand out as a book, it’s almost better to blend in. [Young readers] are already doing all of these things anyway, so let’s see if we can get a way to have them also reading as part of everything they’re doing, as opposed to just putting it all away and pulling out a book.” What follows is a preview of two projects Carman is using to explore this blended approach to reading: 3:15 Stories and Dark Eden.
Under the new proposal, add-on testing will be automated. Add-ons hosted on Mozilla’s website will be tested against any new Aurora and Beta builds and automatically marked as compatible unless some problem is discovered. For those add-ons that are not hosted on the official site, the updateURL mechanism will accomplish the same thing. The Mozilla blog says that the new setup will mean that the Aurora and Beta channels will be compatible with the vast majority of add-ons.
Hodgman: Yeah, of course. That was a bad joke. OK. But I think Lost is fascinating on a lot of levels, because to me it was at the epicenter of the Jock v. Nerd fight in popular culture that I think is really going on right now. You know, there was clearly a lot of discomfort, it seems to me, among some people who were involved in making Lost in deciding whether or not it was just going to be a science-fiction show or not. There was clearly a retooling between season two, which was incredibly geeky with all sorts of references to B. F. Skinner and esoteric pseudoscience from the ’70s, and you know 3/4 inch video tapes. Pure geek subjects. And obviously the mystery and the mythology of what the island is and whether or not it’s the product of science or of you know something supernatural. And then there was clearly a retooling to focus on the other element of the show, which had always been there as, “Are these three pretty people gong to fall in love with each other?”
In a partnership with Students In Free Enterprise, an international nonprofit that mobilizes university students to create economic opportunities, the MPAA hopes that getting students to create PSAs will help convince them to eschew copyright piracy.
“When you get the kiddies together they get over-excited and want to play. I wish they would turn their talents to more useful activities, like helping me figure out what subway to take to McSorley’s Tavern,” grumbled one elder hacker, who asked not to be identified.
The Phantom Gaming System is an advanced console and online service that promises on-demand games, game rentals, demos and upgrades, all delivered through an always-on broadband connection.
Von Ahn’s fixation on leveraging the crowd to convert large volumes of content into something useful has carried into Duolingo, which launched to the public in June. While the company only uses Creative Commons licensed text for its lessons right now, the company has plans to offer paid translation services to website owners as a way to make money.
Investigators say there are at least half a dozen other arrests currently in the works. In addition, U.S. Postal Inspectors and Customs and Border Protection agents have seized at least 3,000 suspicious packages that authorities say can be tied to Silk Road.
The SCO Group confirmed Thursday that a memo published on open-source community blogs is legitimate, but that it is not the smoking gun that Linux advocates say it is.
Critics also maintain that the final arbitration rule would not have protected consumers in the Equifax case because each circumstance appears to be unique to the individual’s account. According to Alan Kaplisnky and Mark Levin of Ballard Spahr LLP – who have represented clients against the CFPB – the incident “exemplifies why the Senate should vote to repeal the CFPB arbitration rule. The CFPB, the FTC and state attorneys general … got involved almost immediately and will advocate on behalf of consumers more efficiently and effectively than class action lawsuits.”
“Speakeasy’s goal is to bundle various music and VOD services into our DSL package offerings,” said Michael Wells, a company spokesman. “In doing so, (we) blend the service fees into the customer’s single Internet connection bill. By doing this, we can monetize these services while circumventing the hesitancy or unwillingness to pay for music on the Net.”
Though Craigslist doesn’t disclose its financials, its profit margin is generally believed to be robust. The site makes money by charging people to post certain types of listings — job postings; dealer ads; therapeutic services. Low operating costs and a massive user base — according to Alexa.com, Craigslist is the 15th most popular website in the United States — can lead to consistent profits, no matter how old your website looks.
EG: I consider myself a geek for sure. But while I used to be a hardcore Dungeons & Dragons player (maybe addict?), nowadays I seem more attracted to fantasy movies and books than gaming. Perhaps it’s because I don’t have the time to immerse myself in role-playing games, or I just haven’t connected with a group of friends who also like to game. I’d say in general, I tend towards “escaping” into a fantasy realm like Tolkien’s Middle-earth more so than playing Xbox or World of Warcraft. Besides, I never had all that good hand-eye coordination.
I don’t know if I’d recommend the Barn With Silo right away if you’re just getting started with Playmobil — it’s kind of an overwhelming amount to take in all at once — but it is certainly quite cool. I’m already eyeing the tractor, actually.
Chris Messina is quick to point out that OpenID Connect is just an idea at this point, not a spec or a complete draft.
