User-generated content is the Big Thing in the mainstream. YouTube, MySpace, Digg, Second Life – it’s all about providing a platform and letting users loose on it. Even newspapers are in on the game, handing out laptops and asking citizen journalists to file stories; the amateur gets a small fee for any story the paper publishes.
The goal, Noller says, is to turn the PyCon code of conduct into something the community is constantly revising. “The rationale, several years ago, when we put the PyCon code of conduct in place, was to make it a safer place, a more inclusive place, for everyone – men, women, everyone,” Noller tells us. “But the community evolves. People evolve. Standards evolve. So, being able to have this feedback loop for the community can be really important.”
Guidant (GDT) on Monday said it faces 14 civil lawsuits related to its Ancure product for treating aortic aneurysms, which involve dangerous ballooning of the heart’s largest artery. The product was associated with 12 deaths the company had failed to properly report in 2001, in addition to 16 deaths the company had already disclosed to the government.
Whenever lawmakers such as those in New York introduce bills to prohibit the use of a handheld cell phone while driving, they almost always cite a 1997 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The article, written by University of Toronto medicine professor Don Redelmeier, shows that talking on the phone while driving quadruples a driver’s chance for a car crash.
That is my unedited comment … in retrospect, it’s incomplete and oversimplified. I thought it required more explanation so I offered to do some research on the particular topic of the Cascadia subduction zone, especially with respect to sedimentation, and put together a post (which you are reading right now). Anaconda agreed that would be a good idea:
I heard back from Fritz Kass, chief operating officer of the Intercollegiate Broadcasting Network (IBS), about the appeal his organization filed today in an attempt to have the new royalty rates that could drive webcasters out of business overturned.

Apple has just a 2 percent share of the smartphone market in India, one of the world’s fastest-growing smartphone markets.
In addition, the company may activate by default certain security features in Windows, such as Internet Connection Firewall. “We’re certainly exploring defaulting more for security and we think that is what customers are asking for,” he said.
At the conservative website Townhall.com, there’s a delightful piece up about the war on middle class values. Author Michael Medved purports that the “grotesquely violent and anti-authoritarian” Grand Theft Auto IV is a threat to the American Way of Life. I hadn’t realized being “anti-authoritarian” was necessarily a bad thing. I mean, wasn’t the point of 1984 or Animal Farm that muddling about as docile sheep wasn’t the best idea for fans of free thinking?

The Dungeons & Dragons Experience is going strong out in Arlington, Virginia, and delicious material is being leaked onto the web at a steady pace.
If that feels like too much, a password manager would still up your game
For retailers, scraping can be a two-way street, and that’s where things get interesting. Retailers want to see what their rivals are doing, but they want to prevent rivals from snooping on them; retailers also want to protect intellectual property like product photos and descriptions, which can be scraped and reused without permission by others. So many deploy defenses to subvert scraping, says Josh Shaul, vice president of web security at Akamai Technologies. One technique: showing different prices to real people than to bots. A site may show the price as astronomically high or zero to throw off bots collecting data.
In a world where playing together on the couch is becoming rarer and rarer, YouTubers offer a substitute by straddling the line between reality stars, critics, and comedians. An open seat next to the play button. The tenor of conversation, for the Grumps and a lot of other Let’s Players, runs the gamut from irreverent to the personal, moving along the same uneven lines as real conversation with friends. A goofy reverie might turn into a confessional. It’s not community, exactly, but it’s a proxy of one, and I think it’s easy to devalue that unless you personally need it. Proxy communities, through mediated relationships and art, create a space for people to see themselves more clearly and to build a sense of connection with the broader world. When you’re in isolation, proxy communities can help you find real ones.
I found a list of book titlesand chose the ones that I liked and that would most likely fit on the spines of the books. At first, I tried wrapping a couple of books in a burlap type fabric and then painting them with tea and coffee to help age them. They looked ok, but I wasn’t thrilled with them. Then I had the idea to use paper and do book covers. I found this nifty website that had textures. I downloaded several textures from their site and set about picking which ones would go with which title. I had already downloaded and installed some Harry Potter fonts from MuggleNet. Once I had the right texture, I added text to the image and printed them out. I used rubber cement to attach the paper and voila! It was a fairly easy project and my daughter could have easily helped (she was at school). If you decide to make some book covers, be sure you have plenty of color ink on hand and verify that the lettering is going the direction you want. It’s no fun having to run to Flourish and Blotts right in the middle of a project.
But last week, President Barack Obama announced his administration would roll back the secrecy that surrounded the Bush Administration, and called on government agencies to err on the side of openness and release information whenever possible.
Earlier this year, Kozmo said it was gearing up for a more conventional approach, including a print catalog, to sell its products.
The device offers an amazing level of control, from simply checking the current location of the device all the way to tweaking settings to let you know the exact moment a child crosses a boundary (entering school grounds), or gets into a speeding car (you set the maximum speed that triggers an alert), or gets too close to a No-Fly-Zone (such as the one you’ve currently defined as a 500 foot diameter circle going around the neighborhood Hooter’s restaurant).
Bolster Defense is a card which simply adds another defense: the opposing player puts their skirmish card back in their hand and you have another skirmish. Bombs are powerful cards that basically beat anything — but you only have a few in your deck. The only thing that beats a bomb is the “Bomb Buster,” which some of the Sergeants (level 3) have. A Spy cancels the current skirmish, lets you look at your opponent’s hand, and choose a card for them to play in the next skirmish — which is almost a free win, unless it turns out that nothing in your hand beats what they have already. There are also some “Spy Buster” cards which defeat Spies.
According to Bhatia, this job is only getting easier as AltSchool grows. Before joining the company in 2014, he was a product manager at Zynga, where the slightest update to a game would yield millions of metrics from millions of users, making it easy to detect problematic patterns and major opportunities. Then he got to AltSchool, where there was just one classroom, with one measly set of data, and suddenly, finding those patterns got a lot harder.
Google also has tried to address advertisers’ concerns about their ads running next to offensive content by banning its ads from some objectionable videos on YouTube, like those that promote discrimination or advocate illegal drug use. Google also won’t place its ads on web pages with objectionable content — porn, for example, and or sites that promote suicide or violence.
GM: How much freedom do you have to select which manga make it into WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP (comparing to the Japanese version?)
Another appealing aspect of Adobe’s Edge Suite is Animate 1.0, which has been improved considerably since our initial review. Animate still doesn’t output canvas or SVG (which makes the HTML5 marketing somewhat misleading), but it does a good job of helping Flash refugees feel more at home creating standards-based animations.

“The sight and sound, we pretty well know how to do that,” Howard said. “The smell, we have an idea of how to do it.”
