“A shared-disk cluster permits any one of the computers to communicate across the network with the credit card database on the hard disks, retrieve records for a particular customer, and make changes that will then be available to all other users on the network.”
The Armadillo projection was invented in 1943 by a Hungarian immigrant named Erwin Raisz. Raisz had trained in his home country as an engineer, but after coming to New York he enrolled in Columbia University and followed his passion to become a mapmaker. He was insatiable. While pursuing his Ph.D., he taught cartography (one of the first formal classes in the U.S.), and paid the bills by hand-drawing maps for a company on the Upper West Side. After he graduated, he was offered a job as a professor and map curator at the newly minted Institute of Geographic Exploration at Harvard University (IGE).
In September of last year, the Glenn Commission reported that the lack of good math and science teachers in the United States has reached crisis proportions.
Lawyers will file their briefs online, argue their cases by teleconference and present evidence through streaming video to judges who have been trained in tech arcana.
The Defense Intelligence Agency, which runs the DCS, is trying to cast the move as a positive one for the service. “We appreciate the HASC’s support in allowing us to proceed in meeting [our] mission, and we welcome the HASC’s language that will allow us an opportunity to demonstrate further that we are proceeding smartly and as good stewards of taxpayers’ money,” Lt. Col. Thomas Veale, a Defense Intelligence Agency spokesman, tells Danger Room in an e-mail.
“We’re in planes, trains, automobiles, commercial and residential construction, hospitals. … It’s really everywhere,” Cameron said. “It’s really hard to go through a day without encountering our brand.”
Legal experts generally dispute that view since YouTube has consistently relied on the safe harbor provision of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act of 1998 as a shield against lawsuits. However, that doesn’t mean individual users who post copyrighted material won’t be sued. YouTube explicitly states that such users are liable.
When I embedded in Logar in late 2009, Gukeisen told me NATO would need four years to complete Operation Extreme Makeover. Now, halfway to the deadline, I’m on my way back to the province to check up on the alliance’s efforts.
The website is much like Yelp, but its members review remedies, instead of restaurants and barber shops. It allows anyone who is facing a tough medical decision to draw upon the experience of crowds.
Meanwhile, California Congressman Howard Berman (D-Los Angeles) is preparing legislation that would allow entertainment companies to obstruct the peer-to-peer networks with a variety of invasive electronic techniques, including software that blocks file transfers, redirects users to other sites or confuses users with fake files.
Still, he felt comfortable enough with Wolfson to proceed. Ketamine can cause blood pressure to rise and the heart to race, so Michael began with a low-dose lozenge to see how he’d react. When nothing untoward happened, Wolfson gave him a shot in the shoulder. At subanesthetic doses, ketamine is considered a dissociative agent: You remain conscious but may lose awareness of your body and, depending on the dose, feel like you’re traveling to other realms.
Malamud was recently invited to make a speech at Ahmedabad, where the Indian pacifist had his ashram. He will give it on Gandhi’s birthday, October 2. In anticipation he has taken on something of a Gandhi obsession — biographies of the man and histories of India populate his library. And of course he has put Gandhi’s collected works online, 11 gigs worth.
By professional standards, Rosengarten is a hack. He’s never had a music lesson in his life. He’s no prodigy either. He’s a 48-year-old chemistry teacher in upstate New York. He can’t read sheet music, and he doesn’t aspire to. Like many people, though, he has a fascination with any new technology that allows him to compose and play songs for fun. In a recent YouTube video, Rosengarten unboxes his LinnStrument and immediately coaxes a decent melody out of it. Like any good teacher, his enthusiasm is genuine and infectious.
In other news, Apple issues official statement of outrage at the “filthy” Lady Chatterley’s Lover.
To many, it might seem rather pointless, especially after the launch of the original iPhone: When the queues dispersed, customers were able to walk in and just buy one, no waiting required. What these naysayers miss, though, is the camaraderie and carnival atmosphere amongst the Apple fans. As Gear Diary’s Wayne Schulz says:
Sometimes good ideas fail. That seems to be the case for Once, the innovative photojournalism magazine that launched its pilot issue last summer with big hopes of capitalizing on the iPad as a new publishing tool.
Emotions are bubbling over on all sides of the spam battle. Recently, when an anti-spam group merely displayed an erroneous message on its website for a brief period, pro-spam forces were apoplectic, declaring that the anti-spam folks were themselves sending out spam.
The OPM had no IT security staff until 2013, and it showed. The agency was harshly criticized for its lax security in an inspector general’s report released last November that cited its lack of encryption and the agency’s failure to track its equipment. Investigators found that the OPM failed to maintain an inventory list of all of its servers and databases and didn’t even know all the systems that were connected to its networks. The agency also failed to use multi-factor authentication for workers accessing the systems remotely from home or on the road.
Asked if Hacking Team had ever been issued a certificate in the name of Kamel Abed or used such a certificate to sign its spy tools, spokesman Rabe said only, “Kamel Abed is a common Arab name, and I‘m not going to comment further than that.”
If you insist on profiling Europe’s terrorists, maybe start closer to home. Besides the errant Syrian passport, most of Europe’s terrorists are European. Terrorists, or at least the brand of religious zealot attracted to ISIS, Al Shabaab, or Al Qaeda, tend to be from marginalized communities. “If you look at the Charlie Hebdo attacks, those individuals were not immigrants or refugees,” says Simond de Galbert, a visiting fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “They were French citizens, the sons or grandsons or great-grandsons of immigrants who arrived in France.”
As someone who bought__ The Annotated Sherlock Holmes__ by W.S. Baring-Gould at the age of thirteen, once I found out this place existed, I had to visit.
“This legislation would be a tremendous blow to our group and to the effort to eradicate child pornography from the Internet,” said David Ellis, the assistant director of BytesCanada. The Ottawa nonprofit group investigates allegations of kiddie porn reported through its Internet tipline, using programs such as NeoTrace to track down the location of servers hosting offensive images. If the group determines that a tip is legitimate, they forward it to local law enforcement authorities.
Hackers’ software, including “carding generators” designed to generate and authenticate credit card numbers, is also available on vendors’ tables. This software can also be downloaded for free.
Planet G was the sixth planet found circling Gliese 581, a red dwarf star 20 light-years from Earth. A team of astronomers from the Geneva Observatory in Switzerland found the first four planets using the HARPS spectrograph on a telescope in Chile. The team carefully measured the star’s subtle wobbles as the planets tugged it back and forth.
